Fans lobby Stephen Colbert to host "Restoring Truthiness" rally in D.C. to rival Glenn Beck's event
Source: NY Daily News

Move over, Glenn Beck.

The Internet is clamoring for another massive rally at the Lincoln Memorial, but this time, the people want to see Stephen Colbert speak.

Colbert fans have launched a viral movement lobbying the comedian to host an event rivaling the Fox host’s recent "Restoring Honor" rally.

Promoting it with the tagline "Restoring Truthiness,” Colbert supporters have created a website, Facebook group, and even designed posters for the proposed rally.

They've also successfully infiltrated Google Trends, where "Restoring Truthiness" is currently entrenched among the top 10 list of the day's most popular Internet searches.

98. Kult Klassic
But moran has become a kult klassic. Unfortunately most wingers don't get it so any sign using it would probably need to include that famous photo. There's nobody in this country skewers Fux noise in general and various individual Fux personalities that the Comedy Central duo. You'd think the nitwits a Fux would get tired of it but I suspect they know better than to start a battle of wits with either Jon or Stephen, any thrust would get a riposte from one of those two twice as devastating as the original thrust.

I'd feel better about it if the Lincoln Memorial wasn't used as the backdrop for a rally based on satire - even though I'm a Colbert fan.

Beck's comedy show and Colbert. Beck's comedy show was not meant to be comedy in his eyes, Colbert is a comedy. Big difference.

Didn't he ask for donations.... to support the troops or something like that? But in the small print it said the money went to pay for the raly 1st. The troops got whatever was left.

Is that gossip?

59. Yeah, I read that too.
Becker Head asked the people at the rally to use their cells to phone a number that would automatically donate $10 for the troops. But the fine print said it would only go to the troops after all the costs of the fake rally were subtracted. If Becker Head took a salary then I'm sure the troops got about $20.00.

82. I wish I could attend
a Colbert rally. But I am not at all well. Of course I understand he is a wise liberal. He is brilliant, really. I'd like to see an actual one million attendance. That would be a black eye for the Beckster. :fistbump:

60. Now, will Ed Schultz's rally get this coverage?
While it may have more attendance than Beck's rally, I doubt it will get the coverage.

84. Of course not
In the words of an average American, "Who the heck is George Shultz? never heard of him"

Also, a significant percentage of democrats are too cool to go to an earnest rally, But a tongue-in-cheek, ironic rally would be ok.

66. Colbert is best...
as his character. To do another March on Washington for Truthiness would be a major mistake. Both he and Jon Stewart have to be able to skewer the Beck's and Limbaugh's, et al rather than become objects of worship themselves.

80. That would be the point - skewering them. Colbert is a "character" just like Beck and Sista Sarah -
Except he's funny intentionally.
That's why it makes awesome satire and actually works. He's the only one that comes to mind when I think of this sort of satire. Plus this country needs a good collective laugh both at ourselves and at the RW. Laughter heals.

Cheers
Sandy

86. I was in DC on 8/28
I checked out both events held that day. Friendly crowds at both. I think you are on to something. I would go to DC again to attend a "laugh at ourselves" rally. Put Beck and Colbert together on stage at the same time. That would be a hoot.

94. Right, which is why I think Stewart shouldn't be there
This isn't a slam on Jon, but their styles are so different. Colbert stays in character all the time as a parody of a blowhard conservative pundit whereas Stewart presents TDS more or less as himself. I think the joke would only work if it's just Colbert taking apart the whole Tea Party thing with surgical skill, and maybe a couple of lesser known character comedians as support acts, who could probably use the exposure. Stewart would break the illusion.

67. I'll attend that one and bring the kids! (16 & 7) - DC is quite a distance
(NE Florida) but I was able to get my 1st *new* car EVER this year (American - UNION made too). This would be an excellent road trip to take as a family. Fun, funny and punny. Something they'll remember for the rest of their lives - like snorkeling 70 miles off Key West FL which was our first big family holiday together in 10 years.

Cheers
Sandy

And Helen Thomas, many Repugs think that Colbert is conservative.

Most of them are missing the "irony" gene.

God I hope Colbert does it!

Stewart and Colbert will be part of the Oct 2 rally. I think they are working together with Ed and the unions. They are not going to be separate. They are working together.

103. 2 million in attendance
I estimate I counted millions and millions at the "Restoring Truthiness" rally. What? It hasn't happened yet? Well, I'll wait to estimate 2 million in attendance then..... 2 million ten if you count geese from God who will fly over and certainly support Stephen.

Let's take back America from those that took back America when it wasn't taken in the first place---unless you count when it was taken by that Communist Dwight D. Eisenhower who infiltrated the presidency as reported by the John Birch Society in the 50s.

113. Reddit has started a donors choose.com drive to help persuade Colbert...
They've raised almost $50,000 already:

http://www.reddit.com/r/blog/comments/ddc0w/update_on_the_colbert_rally_time_to_show_our/

Pretty cool, huh? Colbert mentioned the internet campaign to convince him to do the rallynon tonight's show. Still no commitment. Darn.
