Vatican: Quran burning 'outrageous' (Palin also chips in, "please stand down")

Source: CNN

Burning the Quran would be an "outrageous and grave gesture," the Vatican said Wednesday, joining a chorus of voices pleading with a small Florida church not to burn Islam's holy book on the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Vatican body responsible for dialogue with other religions expressed "great concern" about the plan by Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida.

Jones announced Wednesday that the church's website provider has "canceled" Dove World Outreach Center's accounts, though its website, and another URL for a book written by Jones titled "Islam is of the Devil," were still accessible Wednesday evening

=snip=

As reaction to the planned event grew Wednesday, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin took to social media outlets, using Twitter to call on Jones to "please stand down." On Facebook, Palin wrote that Jones' planned Quran burning "will feed the fire of caustic rhetoric and appear as nothing more than mean-spirited religious intolerance. Don't feed that fire."

I just had to come back and edit to add that, even though it pains me to give her props for making this statement, IMO the hypocrisy of her saying anything "will feed the fire of caustic rhetoric and appear as nothing more than mean-spirited religious intolerance. Don't feed that fire." is breathtaking.

2. So Palin is now showing more 'leadership' than elected
rethug leaders, who won't say a word. Surprising, but I'm glad she piped up. Maybe someone will listen to her.

18. Speaking of the military, there's a reason why Palin's not parading Track around the country with
her and using him like she uses all of her children.

I'd like to know what that reason is.

8. I'll give Palin props for that (Just this once ;) ). America really needs to unite against
this rising tide of bigotry before it's too late. It's getting too crazy, no one will benefit from this.

12. +1
I give Palin credit, too. We should also give credit to Mitt Romney and Glenn Beck who are also opposed. If we think the way they phrased their opposition seemed cavalier or too reserved or too weak, we should consider the source - and their audience.

Hey, I'm not saying I like Palin, Romney, or Beck. However, we need to recognize when we are agreement. Now, if only they would realize that an Islamic Center in lower Manhattan is no big deal and opposition to it is just a milder form of Islamaphobia.

21. I don't
Palin compared it to building 'the mosque on ground zero'.

"but doing so is insensitive and an unnecessary provocation -- much like building a mosque at Ground Zero."

17. This opinion did not originate in Palin's pea brain. It's all advisor-speak.
I'm sure she's disappointed. She was probably all ready to go burn books with the pastor.

19. ACTUALLY as someone who is in favor of the GZ Mosque...
We would have to be in favor, although not in agreement with, the Quran book burning, on grounds of its Constitutionality, because as she said: "People have a constitutional right to burn a Koran if they want to, but doing so is insensitive and unnecessary provocation— much like building a mosque at ground zero". And while YES it is insensitive, we are a Nation of LAWS, not morals, so to be in favor of the so-called 'insensitivity' of the GZ Mosque, and its large opposition, then one would have to be in favor, although not in agreement, of the insensitivities of the book burning. That is of course they have all their legal permits to actually even have a book burning, open flames, fire permits, because otherwise it would be deemed illegal.
