Mahatma Gandhi, Irish Republican Army prisoners and American suffragists viewed the hunger strike as the ultimate form of nonviolent protest against oppression. On Thursday, local Tea Party activist Tom Cavanaugh began fasting in order to draw attention to a slightly less weighty issue of political justice: Fox News host Sean Hannity's failure to interview GOP gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino on his syndicated radio show.

Wait a minute — didn’t Cavanaugh say just yesterday that he was committed to holding out until Hannity caved or until Monday evening, when he would return to the Capital Region to cast his primary vote and probably eat a hoagie or something?

Well, he’s had second thoughts about that whole “whatever it takes” bit. Cavanaugh’s reasons for quitting:
* He’s really hungry: See above.
* He’s afraid for his safety: “I was told by the powers that be that they wouldn’t be able to guarantee my safety,” Cavanaugh said. Who did he mean — WABC? No, the cops: The furor over the now-suspended Koran-burning in Gainseville, Fla., could make him a target tomorrow, when the city would be remembering the 9/11 attacks. Who might attack him, you ask? Angry Muslims, Cavanaugh said: “I wear an American flag do-rag — that’s a provocation right there.”
* Hannity isn’t responding — and doesn’t do his program on the weekends, anyway. I asked Cavanaugh yesterday about the wisdom of starting a hunger strike so late in the week.
* He’s needed back home: Cavanaugh said Paladino’s campaign staff told him he could be of use promoting Paladino back in the Capitol Region — though probably not as a hunger striker, one would suppose.
