Clashes erupt in Indian Kashmir
Source: Al Jazeera English

Sunday's clashes were the latest in what has now become a near-daily feature of life in Kashmir (AFP)

At least 20 people have been injured in clashes between Indian security forces and separatist protesters who defied an indefinite curfew imposed on Indian-administered Kashmir.

The government deployed thousands of security forces and imposed an indefinite curfew on Kashmir's summer capital, Srinagar, on Sunday, a day after demonstrators set fire to public buildings in protest against Indian rule.

Five people were wounded when police fired live ammunition and tear gas shells in southern Kashmir to disperse a crowd throwing stones at the home of PM Syed, Kashmir's education minister.

"Syed was inside at the time of attack, but escaped unhurt," a senior police official said.

Thousands protest after new death in Indian Kashmir

Posted 37 minutes ago

Thousands of villagers demonstrated in Indian-administered Kashmir on Sunday, police say, after a protester was killed by a police bullet - the 71st death in three months of unrest. The 30-year-old man died in hospital on Sunday after being injured last week when police fired on a demonstration in the northern village of Palhalan.

His death brought thousands of residents in Palhalan and adjoining villages out onto the streets chanting pro-independence slogans, said residents reached by telephone. "Thousands of men, women and children attended the funeral," said Ghulam Ahmed, a resident, adding that mourners later dispersed of their own accord.

Government forces have been battling for months to contain violent demonstrations in the mainly Muslim region that were ignited by the police killing of a 17-year-old student on June 11.

A total of 71 protesters and bystanders - including some children - have been killed, mostly by security forces firing on demonstrators after being pelted with stones.

4. Not every bad thing in India or Kashmir is caused by Pakistan
India is quite able to screw things up without involving PK. Or Islamists. Or any of your usual targets.

6. Indeed.
My understanding is that most Kashmiris would like to be shut of all three: China, India, and Pakistan. Three colonial powers duking it out for influence is not a recipe for peace and prosperity.
