Whitman lawyer tells TV stations to pull anti-Whitman CTA ad
Source: Sacramento Bee

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman is threatening to sue television stations that run a California Teachers Association ad attacking the candidate, calling the spot a lie.

The Whitman campaign today said some stations have pulled the ad. The CTA said it is trying to confirm that.

The ad, released last week, said Whitman intends to cut $7 billion in school funding and lay off teachers.

In a Sept. 10 letter to station managers, Whitman lawyer Thomas Hiltachk says Whitman has not said such things and that the stations "can be held liable for slanderous or libelous statements."

Whitman refuses to remove anti-Brown ad with questionable information; she says 'essence' of it is true
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/09/whitman-refuses-to-take-down-ad-partly-based-on-inaccurate-report.html

Republican gubernatorial nominee Meg Whitman refused Tuesday to take down an advertisement that attacks Jerry Brown’s record that is based, in part, on a discredited report.

“Absolutely not, the essential elements of that ad are absolutely true,” Whitman said on the “Good Day L.A.” show on KTTV.

The ad features footage of then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton attacking Brown’s record and honesty during a 1992 Democratic primary debate. Clinton cites a CNN report that said taxes were higher when Brown left the governorship in 1983 than when he took office in 1975; the state Department of Finance confirmed Friday that taxes actually fell during Brown’s tenure. The Brown campaign has been calling on Whitman to take down the ad.

13. Hell, they'd all be paupers by the time we got through with them. But if Fox can lie
why can the other TV stations?

She sounds mighty desperate.

7. Brown has been sitting on his warchest.

Letting her pour money into her own campaign. Hopefully he'll be firing up the political machine soon.

17. Whites of their eyes strategy
I think Brown is holding his fire until he sees "the whites of her eyes", then it's both barrells! He can also keep his attack strategy secret and give her very little time to respond. I believe Brown will beat the snot out of Whitman on election day.

8. Update: Comcast caves in to Whitman's demand
http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/2010/09/comcast-pulls-california-teach.html

The cable company Comcast has stopped running a TV ad by the California Teachers Association accusing Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman of proposing to lay off teachers and slash school budgets, according to Comcast spokesman Andrew Johnson.

Comcast made the call this morning after receiving a letter from Whitman campaign lawyer Thomas Hiltachk accusing the teachers' union ad of slandering Whitman. Comcast serves 2 million households from Salinas to Mendocino County.

10. Whitman's and Brown's education plans
http://www.megwhitman.com/platform_topic.php?type=education

http://www.jerrybrown.org/sites/default/files/Education%20Plan_0.pdf

Neither explicit mentions budget cuts, but Whitman's sure as hell echoes Obama's fraudulent right-wing-suckup education reform. Maybe Whitman needs to clean up her own act before complaining about opposition ads.

16. This Is The "Yellow Cake" Scenario.
Whitman isn't making the false allegation against Brown. She is only broadcasting a video of Bill Clinton making the allegation. The CTA should re-produce the video using the quotes of others rather then attacking themselves. Problem solved.
