Christine O'Donnell upsets Mike Castle in Delaware Senate primary

Marketing consultant Christine O'Donnell upset Rep. Mike Castle in the Delaware Republican Senate primary tonight, handing the tea party movement a major victory and giving Democrats an unexpected chance to hold the First State seat.

O'Donnell, who is making her third run for the Senate in as many elections, relied heavily on national surrogates -- from the Tea Party Express to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin -- to fuel a shoestring campaign against the iconic Castle who had held elected office in the state for more than four decades.

The O'Donnell victory, which was considered a political impossibility as recently as a month ago, is a major boost for Democratic hopes of holding the seat once held by Vice President Joe Biden. New Castle County Executive Chris Coons was unchallenged for the Democratic Senate nomination.

While the Delaware race was the marquee contest of the night, it was far from the only one on the ledger as seven states and the District of Columbia voted in the final major primaries of the 2010 election.

That said, if Coons can't rally independents/moderates to his side then the Republican nut-job will be in the Senate next year.

8. Oh! The night of the Iwanna! Or, the Republican
establishment of "I wanna be back in power" seems to have hit a pothole. It looks like their toxic anti-Democratic, anti-Obama posturings and propaganda have backfired on them. I feel like doing a little grave dancing. Now if our Dems don't take this opportunity and run with it, they belong in the same graveyard with those Republicans who are retiring unexpectedly.

37. I agree with you.
Any teabagger victory forces the Republican party to move further to the right to recapture the tea baggers vote. As they move further to the right, the Dems will also move further to the right.

What is there to celebrate? That the country is going to move further to the right??

41. Bad for GOP = Good for America.
If Castle ran against the Dem he would likely win. Running against a bagger gives the Dem a better chance where we had almost no chance. If the bagger wins, so what? They have the same core agenda as the GOP, they are just making the regular GOP'rs look a little less crazy with how flippin nuts they are.

There's a world of difference between the party that nominated Poppy and the party that nominated Dubya. President McCain would have been bad for America. President Palin would have been bad for Earth.

13. Woot!!...WTG! This proves repukkkes need a brain....poor idiots.
I agree with the posters above however, that these scum sucking bottom feeders have no conscience, and they will stoop to any depth to get what they want. This really is a threat to our nation's stability. Bad enough the repukkkes show the world just how f*cked up this country is...but now we have the "compound-repukkkes....aka teabaggers" that are embarrassing the whole country by actually having a voice that can be heard.

This is some scary shit. I'm hoping Chris Coons can beat her by LARGE double digits to show the rest of the world WE really aren't this f*cking insane.

39. One telling graphic in that report...
Look at the total number of votes cast in this primary when it was "called".

60,000 votes. That's it. 30,000 idiots in the state of Delaware voted for this Palin wannabe.

That won't translate to a general election, even in an off year. The Tea Party alone cannot win elections. Centrists and even the more sane of the repukes will not bring themselves to vote for this moron. They might not vote for a Democrat, but they won't vote for her either.

I think this is good news for Dems come November. If we can motivate even a small "get out the vote".

Fear is a great motivator. Fear of the country being run by these morons from the Tea Party will get even the most disaffected liberal / progressive off their ass and to the voting booth. Yeah, be nice to have some great progressive legislative battles won and a President who would have fulfilled our dreams of "Change"... but that wasn't ever to be. Fear will be a good enough substitute. Fear of the Tea Party.

45. She definitely follows the Sarah Palin playbook of hypocrisy
She and her followers make baseless accusations of the married Castle being a homosexual and when his campaign objects she tells him to "put his man pants on".

Meanwhile, the opposition makes a point of her well documented less than stellar financial situation, her living off campaign funds and her thin resume and she has the nerve to bitch about "character assassination" and the "politics of personal destruction.".

Yep, another standard bearer of the the "honesty and integrity" that Beck and Palin promise to bring back to Washington.

36. Okay...

He took on a seriously tough job after New Castle County Council had turned into a circus of personal, financial and political corruption that would have made Caligula blush.

The first question is "how much do you know about Delaware?". As a native, I've come to expect that, other than a joke line in Wayne's World, the answer is not much.

You might think "a county council position to US Senate?" but that's the same step Joe Biden made. We only have three counties, and the other two counties are thinly populated.

In Delaware, coming out of NCC Council without crap on your shoes is a big f'n deal.

42. Again, this is Delaware

Politics is very personal here. We kept Castle in the House the entire time we kept Biden in the Senate.

Voters in Delaware do not vote straight party anything.

What Chris Coon is - is not Christine O'Donnell, whom Delaware voters have rejected repeatedly in general elections.

23. I caught Rush talking about this today
The "Buckley rule" William F. Buckley said that the most electable conservative is the one who must (insert 30 seconds of qualifications and distraction) is the one who most be ...uh... voted for ....because...you see....

Rush is spinning with in his own audience on this. It was funny to listen to as he could not figure out who he was supposed to hope for. He mentionedO'Doneessel would probably win by 20 points while O'Donell would lose by 20 points.... at this point he questioned the polls and who conducted them.

Congrats C O'D Thanks for the easy win.

at that point, anyone who isn't a FReeper (or Pat Buchanan) sees the Gorgon inside and runs the other way.

Hell, when Karl Rove says the Republicans blew their chance to capture the Senate based on the Delaware primary you know there's a problem with the candidate.

53. This may not be good news...
For one thing these primary wins give these people credibility and will make the GOP become even crazier. Secondly in every election following a Presidential election the opposition party typically fare well. So it's pretty likely it'll benefit the GOP regardless of who it is.

I don't think this is due to the "voters being conservative", the tea party will only win seats because of the phenoma I mentioned above.
