Wages uncertain for Chile’s trapped miners
Source: Topinews

Santiago, The 33 miners who are trapped 700 metres underground in northern Chile are not sure they will get paid in the coming months, a trade union spokeswoman said.

Evelyn Olmos, spokeswoman for the trade union at the San Jose mine in the Atacama desert, met Wednesday with the legally appointed auditor for the mine, Maria Ried.

‘She said wages are guaranteed until September, but she gives us no certainty after that,’ Olmos said.

The San Esteban mining company, which owns the mine, insists that it is bankrupt and has no funds to pay the wages.

2. Didn't I hear that the trapped miners are likely to get a whole bunch of job offers?
Ah, here it is - the miners are already getting a thousand job offers for once they get out of the mine.

3. Will their new jobs they pay them for their time underground w/ their old employer?
"Some of the jobs being offered to the miners seem risky — like the four "explosives handler" positions the San Geronimo mining company seeks to fill.

"Some of the spouses of the trapped men have warned them to give up mining or else.

"Lila Ramirez has said her marriage to 63-year-old Mario Gomez will be over if he returns to the mines.

"And Carola Narvaez, whose husband, Raul Bustos, is stuck underground, said a few days after the miners were found alive that 'in my heart, I don't want him to ever return to the mines.'"

4. I expect that they would not do so, however
I would expect book and movie deals that might keep these guys out of the mines hopefully forever.

They may also find themselves as consultants on stress management and disaster issues.

I hope they never have to set foot in a mine again.

5. Your hope
is my hope too.

And it's bullshit if the company fails to pay them while they are trapped! Good God.

6. Well, the first issue of course is to get them out
They should and must be paid for their time, but first they must get out of that hellhole.

7. Trapped Chilean miners could be freed by November
Trapped Chilean miners could be freed by November

London, Sept.17 : The 33 Chilean miners trapped nearly half a mile underground could be freed within two months, rescue workers have said.

The trapped men were previously warned they were unlikely to see daylight before Christmas, but chief engineer Rene Aguilar has outlined a more optimistic timescale, saying a rescue hole should reach them by the beginning of November.

Aguilar said the fastest of three drills being used in the mission had reached a depth of 1,200 feet after digging through 330 feet in just 24 hours.

Engineers are now hopeful that they will reach the trapped Chilean miners by early November

8. Repub view: "Well, they're not working down there,"
say the Republicans, "and the company should charge them the costs of drilling the rescue shaft plus rent for the underground apartment they're currently in, so if they want an income right now they need to start selling stuff on ebay or something."

9. The Company should get a portion of money the miners make from book, film, and consulting deals too.
After all, the miners wouldn't have that kind of opportunity if they hadn't been trapped down there.
