President Obama: Black lawmakers must rally voters back home
Source: Associated Press

President Barack Obama came out swinging against Republicans in a fiery campaign-season speech to black lawmakers Saturday night, making an urgent appeal for the kind of grassroots organizing that propelled the civil rights movement.

With the GOP hoping to regain power on Capitol Hill in the November election, Obama described his adversaries as "a crowd ... that wants to do what's right politically, instead of what's right — period." He never named the opposing party, referring to it as "the other side."

"I need everybody here to go back to your neighborhoods, and your workplaces, to your churches, and barbershops, and beauty shops. Tell them we have more work to do. Tell them we can't wait to organize. Tell them that the time for action is now," Obama said in his remarks.

(snip)
Members of "the other side," Obama said, "want to take us backward. We want to move America forward. In fact, they're betting that you'll come down with a case of amnesia. That you'll forget about what their agenda did to this country when they were in charge. Remember, these are the folks who spent almost a decade driving the economy into a ditch. And now they're asking for the keys back."

1. I agree the ideals promoted over the last decades should not have decision on policy.

Lots of keys, who gives them out again?

However I do agree with the premise.

4. I've been waiting for this to be said.
Our community (Black) must rise in unison to protect our own "change." Too many aspirations are now squarely dependent on this dream to let racism continue to defeat us.

5. Bollocks
The Obama Administration is now reaping the whirlwind of its 'hope' rhetoric. In practice, Obama has been a sham and I've heard from more than a few formerly-enthusiastic voters "He's just another president." In Massachusetts last January, turnout in heavily Democratic cities plummeted and the safest seat in the country was lost. Without stopping to ask why this happened, it's more 'rally the vote' boilerplate. (Jon Stewart suggested a tack to Tim Kaine- Democrats: We don't suck as much.)

Stop the wars and theft, and rebuild people's lives, and polling stations will be packed. Enable and encourage Wall Street and the war machine and, um, not so much. Any questions? Funny I should ask...

What's it like in a country with an opposition party?

6. More words from a wordsmith...
Too bad his pro-corporate, pro-war agenda doesn't match the rhetoric.

Grayson/Franken 2012.

9. What "pro-corporate, pro-war agenda" are you referring to?
Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 11:03 PM by ClarkUSA
Whatever it is: Elizabeth Warren, the Chamber of Commerce, and Wall Street would not agree with you nor would Iraqi PM Maliki or presidential historians.

I like both Grayson & Franken, but realistically, they can't win in 2012.

22. Says who? The media? Right-wing pollsters? DLC corporate sell-outs?
Stop believing their crap. Unless voters demand better, the march toward a fascist police-state will continue. If you truly prefer progressive policies and office-holders who will duke it out with the extreme-right, then stop championing weak, ineffective, wimpy, DLC candidates who are all about "bi-partisanship". And stop undermining street-fighters like Franken and Grayson by repeating the lie that they could never win against a Palin, or a Gingrich. You're allowing yourself to be manipulated by corporate-sponsored propaganda. Use your head and think for yourself; that's how a previous generation elected FDR repeatedly.

Who undermined Grayson & Franken? AND who "repeated the lie that they could never win against a Palin or a Gingrich"? You're so busy spewing your ridiculous talking points you don't even know what the hell I said.

Get over yourself.
