Scott Brown blasts Elizabeth Warren appointment
Source: Boston Herald

Reaction was swift and along party lines following President Obama’s appointment of Wall Street critic Elizabeth Warren to oversee building a new agency to look out for consumers in their dealings with financial institutions.

While Democratic Sen. John F. Kerry and U.S. Rep. Barney Frank hailed the president’s choice as a special adviser to the Secretary of the Treasury on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Republican Sen. Scott Brown insisted that she be subjected to the Senate’s confirmation process.

“Senator Brown is disappointed that there was not a full and fair Senate confirmation process where Ms. Warren could have expanded on her qualifications and vision for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,” said Colin Reed, Brown’s spokesman, in a statement.

Obama was criticized for sidestepping a Senate confirmation fight by appointing the Harvard Law School professor as an adviser who will help set up the consumer agency by July 21, 2011 - the deadline set by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

6. Tell the Republicans when they start acting like grown-up and
give candidates for appointment a fair shot, then
they can complain.

They are in a twit because they wanted to stall having
this new agency. They were hoping they could stop
the whole thing after the fall elections. They want
De-Regulation. This is what is in their craw.

Who is Scott Brown??

8. I hope MA realizes how stupid they
are and spoiled they have become. Brown is incompetent and has always been. The barn jacket is fake and so is the stupid truck. People in Wrentham are very rich and have very little sense. Every penny he earned was for gov. service. National Guard. ("he would quit if they sent him to a war zone")MA house and senate no real leg. initiatives or heavy lifting. He is not smart.

25. I wonder if Brown worries that Warren will do an excellent job and then
return to Massachusetts in 2012 and run against him for Senate. His votes against jobs bills should hurt. (It is very annoying that on all issues the MA papers put Brown's opinion as the lead - even on things Kerry or the House Democrats (like Frank in this case) had a major role in doing.

Couldn't have anything to do with Warren being a popular speculation for Scott's likely opponent in the next Senate race, could it? Nah.

9. Don't we want a nomination fight?
Forcing her opponents out in the open right before an election? It would be an amazing opportunity!

This "we don't want a confirmation battle" line doesn't pass the sniff test.

17. In this case it would be to the detriment of the country
The Repugs would have prevented her nomination from even getting in front of the committee. Remember it only takes one anonymous person to put a hold on a nomination. There are still many nominations for critical positions held up because of this anonymous rule.

I could see the Repugs pulling her into months of bullshit sessions though and the agency would be at a standstill.

19. No, because putting her in committee right now
just puts a gag order on her while the GOP stalls the appointment. Nothing gets said before the election.

This way, she can speak out, and already has started doing so, leading into the election. It will really be useful to show what they did and what they want to do again if back in power.

Warren is brilliant. Do you honestly think she would let herself get played?

20. Wait a sec... Having a spokesman express "disappointment" is now "blasting"?
That headline seems very misleading.

I'm no fan of republicans, but Brown seems more moderate than the norm. He seems like a guy we should be reaching out to rather than calling out. We're never going to be able to exit from this hole with just democratic support. We need some moderate republicans willing to compromise.

Voting against unemployment benefits is moderate?

Voting against state aid is moderate?

Scott Brown is a Republican tool.

38. Moderate? Bc of one or two votes where he differed from a Tennessee Republican?
Not in my book. In the Massachusetts legislature, this self-proclaimed moderate voted with his party something like 96% of the time.

BTW, reaching out v. calling out has less than nothing to do with how Senators vote. It's about re-election, period--what you need to do to get money from the state and national Party and from rich Republicans, with a dash of something you can brag on to voters when it's time to campaign. Aside from that, it's a 100 member clubhouse.

22. Not O.K. to game the system?
So Brown is saying it is not fair for Obama to game the system? But of course it is O.K. for Brown and his cronies to game the system in the Senate by denying confirmation hearings and turning the filibuster into the rule instead of the exception. There seems to be a word for that kind of hypocrisy.

33. This Is What It Sounds LIke, When Republicans Cry
So hypocritical. They loved them some recess appointments when it got John Bolton in as UN Ambassador.

I hope the voters of Massachusetts who voted yes on this imbecile are having a huge amount of voter remorse right now. But ... hey! You're stuck with him.

Sadly, so are we.
