Utah wildfire forces evacuation of more than 1,000 homes

A wildfire apparently sparked by guardsmen practicing with a machine gun has forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 homes in Utah, authorities say. More than 100 firefighters battled the fire in the Salt Lake County city of Herriman, Utah, late Sunday night, Herriman spokeswoman Nicole Martin said.

"Literally, the whole mountainside is on fire," said Lt. Don Hutson of the Unified Police Department. "The flames are just coming down the backyards and bumping up against many of the structures on the high part of the mountain." Hutson described the fire as "extremely fast moving."

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said at news conference late Sunday night that 124 National Guardsman have been called to help battle the ongoing wildfire.
