Reports: Russia won't supply missiles to Iran amid UN sanctions
Source: CNN

Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- Russia has decided not to sell S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran because they are subject to U.N. Security Council sanctions, Russian media reports said on Wednesday, citing the country's armed forces chief of staff.

"A decision has been made not to supply S-300s to Iran as they are definitely subject to the sanctions," Gen. Nikolai Makarov said, according to state-run RIA-Novosti news agency. "There has been an instruction from the country's leadership to stop the deliveries, and we are obeying it."

Makarov didn't give a definite response to whether the contract between Iran and Russia on those deliveries will be terminated. However, he said that "we'll see, everything depends on Iran's behavior," according to RIA-Novosti.

State-run Itar-Tass and independent news agency Interfax also ran quotes from Makarov.

1. BBC: Russian military confirm Iran S-300 missile sale is off
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11388680

A top Russian general has confirmed that a sale of S-300 air defence missiles to Iran will not go ahead because of UN sanctions.

Gen Nikolai Makarov, head of the general staff, told reporters the missiles were "definitely" subject to new sanctions introduced in June.

At the time, Russia's foreign minister said the S-300 deal was not affected.

Possession of S-300 systems would enhance Iran's defence of its nuclear facilities against attack from the air.

2. Just more proof that it's better to have bad friends than good enemies.
Obama's constructive dialog with Russia reaps real, tangible benefits. A whole hell of a lot better than DimSon's "Y'all are either with us or agin' us" b.s.
