Egg company to apologize for outbreak
Source: BDN

WASHINGTON — The owner of an Iowa egg company says in testimony prepared for a House hearing that he was "horrified" to learn that his eggs may have sickened as many as 1,600 people in an outbreak of salmonella poisoning this summer.

Austin "Jack" DeCoster and his son, Peter DeCoster, are scheduled to testify before a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee Wednesday. The panel has asked them to come prepared to explain what steps they have taken to address salmonella contamination found at their farms.

In testimony released by the company, Wright County Egg, the two men say they believe an ingredient sold to them by an outside supplier may be to blame for the outbreak.

So far, an FDA investigation appears to be focused on Wright and another company linked to the illnesses, Hillandale Farms. The two companies recalled more than a half billion eggs related to the outbreak in August.

8. I'm really sorry
Now, can I get back home, collecting money and put all this folderol behind me? The apology should be sufficient to end any legal foolishness (criminal and civil) anyone should be contemplating, right? Is this gonna take all day? I have a 2 p.m. tee time. Come on, fer crissakes!

10. These B*stards should be in prison - but at least I hope they have
to listen to this grandmother and other lady testifying.

A Colorado grandmother hospitalized for five days after eating an appetizer made with salmonella-tainted eggs is urging Congress to pass food safety laws that might have prevented her suffering.

Carol Lobato, 77, of Littleton, developed septic shock and nearly died in July from illness linked to a massive salmonella outbreak and the nationwide recall of half a billion eggs. She’s one of two confirmed victims who will testify in a hearing today that will also include the owners of the Iowa farms deemed responsible for the crisis.

“The infection wiped me out to the point that I could not function on my own,” said Lobato, who flew to Washington, D.C., for a meeting of a U.S. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. “On behalf of myself, my family and the 1,500 others who were sickened, please make our food system safer.”

Lobato will be joined by Sarah Lewis, 30, a mother of two from Freedom, Calif., who was hospitalized twice in June after eating tainted egg custard at a May graduation ceremony.

And in the former case the chef who made an appetizer with raw eggs should be retrained!

DeCoster is a POS with enough KNOWN violations to have put him out of business long ago.
This salmonella outbreak is merely the tip of the iceberg of disgusting things going on in their egg business, and they are blaming "outside suppliers". The outside suppliers did not put rats and their droppings in the chicken houses. The outside suppliers did not house the chickens so close that they could not move. The outside suppliers did not fill the chicken houses with tons of chicken poop.

There is no explanation for what is going on .... There is only greed and greed and more greed.

12. Owner of Iowa egg farm won't testify at hearing
WASHINGTON – The owner of one of two Iowa egg farms linked to as many as 1,600 salmonella illnesses is citing the Fifth Amendment in declining to testify at a House hearing on the outbreak.

The CEO of Hillandale Farms, Orland Bethel, wouldn't answer questions from the House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on investigations.

The owner of the other farm, Austin "Jack" DeCoster, has told Congress that he was horrified that his products may have sickened so many people. His son is suggesting that the outbreak may not be their company's fault.

The two companies together recalled more than a half-billion eggs in August.
