Top U.S. Officials Say Homegrown Terrorists An Emerging Threat
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Efforts by terrorists abroad to radicalize and recruit U.S. residents present new security threats, three top Obama administration officials told Congress on Wednesday.

The threat posed by homegrown extremists shows that the battle against terrorism has become more complex in the past year, underscoring the challenges of pinpointing and blocking plots, said Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

"Groups affiliated with al-Qaida are now actively targeting the United States and looking to use Americans or Westerners who are able to remain undetected by heightened security measures," FBI Director Robert Mueller told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

It appears that "domestic radicalization and homegrown extremism" is becoming more pronounced, Mueller said.

9. I hate to have to think this but some on the radical right are deeply disappointed
that there hasn't been another major attack on US soil to further their fundie causes.

Just saying...

13. You are probably not wrong.
I remember reading somewhere back during the early years of the * administration, than some of the American based neo-Nazi/anti-Semitic hate groups were beginning to actively work with terrorist cells in the ME. I think it was at the Southern Poverty Law Center's web site where I saw the article, but I don't remember exactly which year it was.

Sadly, you are probably not wrong at all. They would be the ones who would be most likely to do it.

7. +1
add crazy bigoted splinter factions (religious, vigilante, and others out there) to the mix, and I really think we have more to worry about from within our nation in regard to individuals and groups of people defined by their ethnic, religious or political beliefs/stances, than anything coming in from outside our borders, beyond our shores.

that the Fort Hood murders were a successful terrorist attack and not a mere criminal act? The first successful terrorist act on US soil since 9-11? Way to go "top Obama administration officials" I suppose this means GWOT is back on? Gotta admire that ability to stay on message.:sarcasm:

12. What I wonder is when are they going to finally classify the Tim McVeighs and Eric Rudolphs
in America as terrorists? I already do. Many people do. Why doesn't our government recognize the crimes those types commit as terrorism?
