Court records: Taxi attack suspect called himself 'patriot'

NEW YORK — A college student declared himself "a patriot" after slashing a New York cabbie's neck because the driver is Muslim, prosecutors said in a court document released Wednesday.

Michael Enright also fumed to the police officers who arrested him that "you allow them to blow up buildings in this country," made an apparent joke about an Arabic greeting, taunted officers and said he had downed a pint of scotch, according to the document.

"Assalamu alaikum — do you like salami and bacon?" the document quoted him as saying. The Arabic phrase means "peace be upon you."

Enright also asked officers "What ya going to do? Beat me up?," called one "a stupid broad" and branded an officer a coward because "you weren't over there," the document said.

Finally, Enright said, "I am a patriot, and I want representation," according to the document.

Police records released during a court appearance Wednesday show the baby-faced attacker incoherently claimed he cut the cabby in self defense - and then said he was targeted because he's Catholic and Jewish.

"That man just tried to rob me, he wanted to rob me, I used self-defense," Enright allegedly told cops during his arrest. "He was holding me against my will. What did I do wrong? I just came back from Afghanistan.

"I need my mother."

"You're prosecuting me because I'm Irish Catholic," he told cops.

Minutes later, Enright told cops, "I'm Jewish, you are going to ruin the entire Jewish race by locking me up."

Michael Enright is a film student at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and has been working with the Intersections International, an interfaith and multicultural effort which seeks to promote justice and peace. The project's website is strongly supportive of the Cordoba House project in lower Manhattan and videos of its leader, Imam Faisel Rauf, are posted on their website.

The 21-year-old aspiring filmmaker had been to Afghanistan recently, working on a documentary on a Marine unit his high school buddy served with. His earlier efforts to embed with his friend were the subject of a profile in the local paper.

The documentary he was working on was "completely nonpolitical," Enright told the newspaper. "It's just showing the young people who are spearheading our foreign policy. They're doing what I don't have to do."

From just reading the comments of the OP I thought maybe he had served in Afghanistan. So I had to go take a look.

His documentary may have been nonpolitical, (not sure, have not seen it) but he is clearly a racist fuck that needs to be punished for this hate crime. Enright is not a patriot. He's a racist bigot who will hopefully be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
