GOP will try to get own candidate off NY ballot

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Republicans will try to remove their own candidate from the ballot in a suburban New York congressional race because he wrote an article warning against racial mingling, a party official said Wednesday.

Jim Russell, 56, a perennial GOP candidate known for his strong opposition to immigration, wrote in 2001 that parents should teach their children "an acceptance of appropriate ethnic boundaries for socialization and for marriage."

Several times, he cited the eugenics movement, the effort to improve the human race by controlling heredity. In a long recitation of the accomplishments of Western civilization, he also quoted T.S. Eliot as writing, "reasons of race and culture combine to make any large number of freethinking Jews undesirable."

The article appeared in the Occidental Quarterly, titled "The Western Contribution to World History." It was first reported on the Politico website.

1. Wow, I just read way too much on Wikipedia about
all the ties of occidental quarterly and regnery publishing (publisher of Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter). I'm surprised it isn't a bigger deal that they are so closely tied to the white supremacist and separatist movement.

2. yeah, was just reading on sourcewatch about regnery
¬snip¬
"Promoting white nationalism is nothing new for Regnery — or his family. His grandfather, William I, signed incorporation papers for the America First Committee, an organization that opposed fighting Nazi Germany in World War II. His father, Henry, created Regnery Publishing, one of the major purveyors of books by right-wing attack dogs like Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy.

"William II has made his mark as a major fundraiser in radical right circles as the founder of the Charles Martel Society in 2001. The society publishes The Occidental Quarterly, an academic-looking journal filled with articles by white-supremacist luminaries such as Samuel Francis, editor for the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens and Wayne Lutton of the hate group The Social Contract Press.

"The society is putting together conferences, summer schools and a speaker's bureau — all designed to push Regnery's view that the white race is veering toward extinction."

In the August 24, 2004, Bill Berkowitz article "White supremacist love connection" published in Working for Change, Berkowitz wrote:

"So, if you're having trouble making a love connection and you're uncomfortable at KKK rallies, haven't made your way to a Council of Conservative Citizens confab, or aren't interested in re-locating to a compound in Idaho, William Regnery's new whites-only dating service might be right up your alley. Regnery, one of the lesser-known members of the right wing publishing family, searching for seed money to launch a service that promises to hook clients up with their very own special white supremacist love connection."

8. Regnery was also associated with the Intercollegiate Studies Institute
Sourcewatch doesn't mention it, but William H. Regnery was formerly on a list of ISI officers and directors. Media Matters shows him as having held that position from 1997 to 2004. (http://freeridebook.com/transparency/people/William_H_Regnery/roles)

That's the same as this Intercollegiate Studies Institute, of course:
http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/citing-mental-anguish-christine-odonnell-sought-69-million-gender-discrimination-lawsuit-again

Court documents obtained Saturday by THE WEEKLY STANDARD reveal surprising new details about the gender discrimination and wrongful termination lawsuit filed by Christine O'Donnell in 2005 against her former employer, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a conservative non-profit based in Delaware. O'Donnell, who is now challenging moderate congressman Mike Castle in the September 14 Delaware GOP Senate primary, sought $6.95 million in damages. In a court complaint, she extensively detailed the "mental anguish" she suffered after allegedly being demoted and fired because of her gender. ...

O'Donnell alleged in a July 1, 2005 complaint filed in district court that she had been demoted because ISI's conservative philosophy dictated that women must be subordinate to men. She claimed she was fired when she contacted the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regarding her demotion. ISI told the Delaware News Journal that she had been "terminated for operating a for-profit business."

And also the same as this Intercollegiate Studies Institute:
http://www.alternet.org/news/145564/james_o%27keefe,_the_landrieu_%27sting%27_and_the_truth_about_conservative_%27journalism%27

And as Dave Wiegel reported in The Washington Independent, O'Keefe and his accomplices, Stan Dai and Joseph Basel, worked as undergraduates at newspapers funded and founded by funds from the Collegiate Network. The Collegiate Network's parent organization, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, enjoyed $8.3 million in contributions in 2009.

3. link to an inteview with Russell about article and being dumped by GOP

Oow: RNN Sits Down With Jim Russell, NY-18 Candidate Spurned By GOP For Extremist Writings »
By Celeste Katz

¬snip¬

She notes today that at a news conference, Russell suggested the GOP was being a bit oversensitive about withdrawing its support from his campaign over the paper, which was featured (at least for awhile) on David Duke's website.

In the interview, which aired tonight, Russell largely tries to dodge French's questions about how, say, Jews in NY-18 should view him as a candidate. He says he's NOT "a kook" or a racist, but the victim of a "smear tactic" by Team Lowey. He doesn't disavow the contents of the paper, which he says he hasn't read in a long time, and accuses the anchor of trying to draw him off topic (as if no one's talking about this in the district?)

Sharpest line from French (in my opinion, anyway): "Jim, I guarantee you: The KKK isn't posting any of my writings."

Watch these excerpts and judge for yourself:

9. "warning against racial mingling"? Keep out of reach of public office!
Edited on Thu Sep-23-10 08:19 PM by alp227
Sheesh. And people want to re-elect Republicans to Congress? The party of "I've got mine, you get nothing", "no to everything by the Democrats even if it's good", and sugarcoated white supremacy?
