NEW YORK — Stock futures fell Thursday after first-time claims for unemployment benefits rose last week for the first time in five weeks.

The Labor Department says there were 465,000 first-time requests for unemployment benefits last week, a jump of 12,000 from a week earlier. Economists predicted claims would be unchanged last week.

Dow Jones industrial average futures are down 73, or 0.7 percent, at 10,600. S&P 500 futures are down 10, or 0.9 percent, at 1,120, while Nasdaq 100 futures are down 13, or 0.7 percent, to 1,967.

1. More tales from the Stupidity Market
I loved how earlier this week the market rallied on "news" that someone had calculated and announced that the recession ended a year or so ago.

I can't believe that some people think the market is actually "smart". All it really measures is political and social tolerance for corporate greed and theft.

2. Our economy has become a ping-pong ball in motion.
Up and down, up and down.

It would have been steadily up if President Obama and our majority in Congress had come in wielding well deserved flaming swords in 2009.

But no, we're 'nice.'

Nice guys finish after cranky old white guys who like to teabag.
