Radio InkGarcia-Perez Named To Head Radio Marti
September 23, 2010: The Obama administration has picked Cuban-American attorney Carlos Garcia-Perez to direct the troubled Radio and TV Marti. The Spanish-language broadcast service is based in Miami and airs programming designed for Cuban listeners. Radio Marti has been plagued by financial scandals and reports of political bias and poor to nonexistent listenership.
"As we observe potential changes in the political and economic landscape in Cuba, it becomes even more important that Radio and TV Marti present a trusted source of objective news and information about events in Cuba and related U.S. policies," said Walter Isaacson, chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governor. "Garcia-Perez is a strong leader with a commitment to the editorial competence and professional journalism required of all broadcasters."
The BBG's release refers to Garcia-Perez's "rich experience in international law and business," but doesn't mention any media experience. His appointment must be approved by the BBG.
