Seattle TimesA proposal to let Canadian engineers work in the state without taking the rigorous test required to be a state-licensed engineer has been rejected by the state Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Meeting in Spokane, the board decided Friday there was too much opposition to change the law, said Gary Braaksma, a Bellingham electrical engineer who opposed the change.
... The new proposal would have let Canadians be licensed here without taking the test The board has been looking at the change in laws for 12 years.
... There are about 24,000 licensed engineers in the state, and about 9,000 of them are foreign. State engineers worried if the law were changed, British Columbia engineers would flock to the state, taking away jobs from local engineers.
