US unable to document any payments for Abu Ghraib

By PETE YOST, Associated Press Writer – 7 mins ago
WASHINGTON – Fending off demands that he resign over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress he had found a legal way to compensate Iraqi detainees who suffered "grievous and brutal abuse and cruelty at the hands of a few members of the United States armed forces."

"It's the right thing to do," Rumsfeld declared in 2004. "And it is my intention to see that we do."

Six years later, the U.S. Army is unable to document a single payment for prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib. Nor can the more than 250 Iraqis or their lawyers now seeking redress in U.S. courts. Their hopes for compensation may rest on a Supreme Court decision this week.

The Army says about 30 former Abu Ghraib prisoners are seeking compensation from the U.S. Army Claims Service. Those claims are still being investigated and many do not involve inmate abuse. The Army added that U.S. Forces-Iraq looked at its records and could not find any payments to former detainees. The Army also cannot verify whether any such payments were made informally through Iraqi leaders.

1. Yes, Rummy was a drunken, lying bastard, as were so many members of the Bush Cabal
which is why is it so frustrating to see policies from that era continued today.

10. Oh, baby! PLUS ONE!
But Rummy had the blessing of the entire evil cabal. They were all complicit in torture, both here and there. Torture being the single greatest crime in existence. They should swing-to a man(and woman in the case of Condi).

20. It is a tell.
From 2000 to 2008 we had fascism 4.0.

Wonder what this new version will bring us.

The really sad part? The PTB would actually get richer if they abandoned their plan of complete control and subjugation.

45. Remember the movie _Superman III_, with Richie Pryor and
Robert Culp? Culp played an evil billionaire. He told the character played by Pryor, "It's not enough that I win. Everyone else must lose."

The way rich guys measure their own dicks is by their ability to chop off everyone else's.

Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 07:49 AM by TexasObserver
You're one of a number of poster who always seems to post threads worth recommending. You, Heidi, and maddezmom are three who come immediately to mind.

Is it a good source for discussion purposes?

Is the article worth reading and discussing?

Is the topic a good one?

Is the tenor of the article and OP appropriate?

These are things I look for in quality thread starting.

18. Simple answer: just take a few inches off of one of the pallets of cash that were being
airlifted out of the country. Over $8 Billion was flown into Iraq on shrink-wrapped pallets.

Here's one General saying he had no idea where it went, saying, "what does it matter?"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/feb/08/usa.iraq1

And here's $3 Billion being flown out:
"More than $3 billion in cash has been openly flown out of Kabul International Airport in the past three years, a sum so large that U.S. investigators believe top Afghan officials and their associates are sending billions of diverted U.S. aid and logistics dollars and drug money to financial safe havens abroad."

Just like Iran/Contra/(cocaine).
They'll take it from where they can get it.
Then, coke/crack was cheap on America's streets.
Now, it's Afghan heroin.

25. Rummy
Has this TREACHEROUS CRETIN ever done anything HONORABLE at any time in his public service?

All governments lie, and one of the best liars in recent American History is Rumsfeld.

The fact this man is not in prison is all the proof I need that America is run by selfish sociopaths, and in no way, shape or form do "we the people" have any control over our rogue, war criminal government.

Problery becouse it was never given ANY competation, that be a simple "sorry we harm you in any way" to paid out money for competation for what they experienced in Abu Girhab at all...

I would bet mutch, that the paper trail would have been there, if any payment was given to the prisoner of Abu Ghraib at all.. So I would say, this is one more evidence, that no payment is given to them who survived, and suffered in the hand of US armed forces at Abu Ghraib

And no one, higher up, that be in the military intelligence, in Pentagon or in the sivilian leadership have faced any form of consequenses for this either.. Just some elisted who was stupid enough to be pictured on piles of humans bodys.. Other, who know this was wrong, was smart enough to never been couth of tape for what they did. And hey are still luring out there, ready to do it again, next time maybe against US sitizien, not just against some arabic...
