6.5 magnitude quake rocks Maluku, Indonesia (no immediate warning of a tsunami)

JAKARTA, Sept. 26 -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 rocked Maluku province in eastern parts of Indonesia on Sunday, there is not potential for tsunami, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency reported here.

The agency reported that the quake jolted at 19:12 a.m. Jakarta time (1712 GMT) with the epicenter at 138 km northeast Tual of the province and at a depth of 59 km.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 2 to 3 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) at Kaimana town.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website that the quake was measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale with a depth of 8.7 km under sea bed.

Strong quake strikes Indonesia: seismologists

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck in Indonesia's eastern Aru Islands, though there was no immediate warning of a tsunami, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 9:12pm (local time) at a depth of 8.7 kilometres and 63 kilometres north-west of Dobo, in the Aru Islands, and 664 kilometres east-southeast of Ambon in the Moluccas, the USGS said.

Green Earthquake Alert in Indonesia

Summary

On 9/26/2010 12:12:38 PM UTC an earthquake of magnitude 6 and depth 8.7km has struck an unpopulated area in the Maluku Province (population: 1.9 million) in Indonesia. GDACS estimates the likelihood for need of international humanitarian intervention to be low (Green alert).

This earthquake can have a low humanitarian impact since the affected region is unpopulated and has medium resilience for natural disasters.

Fortunately it's not in my area but there's always a chance the next one could be. We have to look at it like it's one of the risks of living on the "Ring of Fire".

3. Haven't heard anything on the news here yet
But then I am somewhere in Central Virginia. I'm bummed because it is pouring here, but this news sure puts things in perspective. Here's hoping that this is the end of it, but the severity doesn't bode well for aftershocks. At least tsunamis aren't expected. I remember that Indonesia was one of the worst places that was hit during that natural disaster. You'll be in my thoughts... :hi: :pals:

4. Toba is waking up again.. last time it erupted it started the last Ice Age, and reduced the human
population do to ~1000 mating pairs.. Europe was repopulated by about 38 mating pairs when the ice receded
