Liberal Groups Planning to Rally on National Mall
Source: The New York Times

Hoping to overshadow last month’s rally led by Glenn Beck that drew thousands of Tea Party advocates and other conservatives, a coalition of liberal groups plan to descend on Washington on Saturday to make the case that they, and not the ascendant right, speak for America’s embattled middle class.

Predicting a crowd of hundreds of thousands, some 300 liberal groups — including the N.A.A.C.P., the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the National Council of La Raza and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force — are sponsoring a march on Saturday in the hope of transforming the national conversation so it focuses less on the Tea Party. The groups sponsoring the rally, which is called “One Nation Working Together,” say they hope to supplant what they say is the Tea Party’s divisiveness with a message of unity to promote jobs, justice and education.

“The Tea Party has been getting much more media attention than it deserves, and it’s been saying it represents the voice of middle-class America,” said George Gresham, president of 1199 S.E.I.U., a New York health care union local, who says his union has chartered 500 buses to carry 25,000 union members to the rally. “A lot of us feel we have to get a different voice out there speaking for working people, one respecting the diversity of this country, which the Tea Party does not.”

1. it's something
I have been quite dismayed that the media this week has had a lot to say about the Stewart/Colbert Rally but not the 10-2-10 Rally. I will be there and expect to see hundreds of thousands of others... :patriot:

2. You'll see me. But I'm thinking the message is a bit muddled.
Hence the lack of interest from the media.

To me it's the non-tea party ( The Coffee Clatch?). There seems to be no UNIFYING theme.

But it looks like I'll be traveling with my union. ( Which Obama et al HATES. Are they going to interpret my presence there as supporting federal school ..... ugh here it comes.... "reform"? I HOPE not.)

Who's speaking, BTW? Anyone know?

63. The muddled message is not the reason for the media blackout
Big Media also blacked out the anti-war rallies. The reason for the blackout is that they are republican propaganda outlets.

65. True. However, we haven't done a great job of finding....
.... a focus for this one. An all-consuming rationale.

I'm going because it's NOT a Tea Party... and the midterms are at hand.

Just hope that no one interprets my presence there as in any way supporting the Obama admin's horrifficly Republican ideas re public education.

64. Stewart indicated on his show that...
... they were already going to be broadcasting from there (or somewhere nearby?) that week, so they are staying over to do the rally/rallies that Saturday.

I'm not familiar with the impetus for 10/2, but it would certainly be cool if Stewart or Colbert would pop in on that march.

30. The NY Times is read selectively by the Fox crowd
when Judith Miller (and other Righties) wrote articles in there, it was cited as the bible by RWers "see, it made the NY Times, it must be true"

But, anything not in orgasmic praise of Republican ideas is written off because the NY Times is the liberal media icon.

29. MSNBC will have some coverage
If they can build it up enough, maybe it will at least get a "and in other news today, some liberal groups rallied in answer to Glenn Beck's rally from last month" mention on another network - and they will give a quick cutaway to a crowd closeup (not a distance shot to show a million people or anything...) and the one person holding a somewhat inappropriate sign.

on one network between ABC, NBC, CBS, CNBC, CNN, Fox, and Bloomberg is far less than what Beck's rally got. On Fox, it was wall-to-wall Beck, and it was a lead story on the other networks.

46. The difference is that the media isn't sponsoring it
Like FAUX News did with Becks rally. Non stop pitching on the most watched network (still don't understand that)

So the result will be that after the rally, THAT'S when you'll hear about it, especially on FAUX News, if it doesn't draw as big a crowd. Actually even if it DOES draw more, FAUX has already inflated Beck's numbers 10x so that doesn't matter. Then it will be 24/7 about how this proves Americans are rejecting the "socialist, gay, terrorist-loving agenda of the left"

19. I'll be there
My husband and I will be driving there from Chicago. It's sad that there has been no coverage of this rally like there has been with the Stewart/Colbert rally. I guess the One Nation rally isn't "entertaining " enough to capture peoples attention. I don't think even the liberal shows are covering it except for Big Ed. I know Al Sharpton will be speaking. Bill Press and Norman Goldman will also be there. It's truly frustrating that nobody is hearing about this.

21. "the ascendant right"
Kind of says it all.

It's a movement in the early stages of coming out of its latency. It has suffered a few setbacks, and its current leaders are clownish and shrill, and its demographics aged. Unfortunately, with worse economic problems and a fragmented media and society and no Fairness Doctrine, it will eventually get its footing, and its real leaders.

Honestly, they want middle class Americans to come to DC...well who has the money for a ticket and a hotel stay? Especially if we are on foodstamps or unemployment (which is a large percentage!)

This stuff pisses me off because they will get less coverage, and probably have less attendance, and it will just make the party look bad. when we really need to be using our time & resources to GOTV and maybe fight to get some of these damn important bills passed NOW

I wish i *could* go to DC and attend this rally and the jon stewart one and use the time in between to either look for a job or make an effort to be heard as an impoverished citizen.
But I wouldn't have the resources.....can't even afford to put gas in the car this week

There is no mention in the good grey NYTimes of the actual DATE of the rally. I can see from comments on this post that the date is October 2nd, 2010. Am I being paranoid to think that the NYT doesn't really want us to know when the rally is, exactly?
