US joins condemnation of renewed settlement building

The United States and the UN joined a growing global condemnation of Israel's decision not to extend the building moratorium on Monday.

Earlier, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Foreign Secretary William Hague, and EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherin Aston all issued condemnations of Israel for allowing the freeze to expire.

US State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley on Monday told reporters that the US was "disappointed, but we remain focused on our long-term objective and will be talking to the parties about the implications of the Israeli decision." He said the U.S. position in support of extending the freeze on settlements remained unchanged and praised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas for not immediately walking out of the talks.

Crowley also announced that the Obama administration's special Middle East peace envoy George Mitchell will return to the region on Tuesday to continue urgent efforts to break a deadlock in negotiations over Israeli settlements. Mitchell will hold meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials later in the week.

5. Only if you're not paying attention to the whole world.
Israel detractors are the real hypocrites.

8. It's easy for you to throw around the "H" word.
But let me tell you. There is enough hypocrisy to go around over there on both sides.

If "Palestinians should become full citizens of Israel with equal rights for all" then there would cease to be a Jewish state. If that's what you want that's fine, but UN resolutions at the time of the formation of Israel in 1948 specifically allowed for it to be a "Jewish state." But if Jews are no longer a majority within the boundaries of Israel, then it obviously will not be a Jewish state any longer.

This is a tough issue, but I continue to believe that the Jews do deserve to have their own state. They need to find a way to balance that reality against the legitimate rights of the Palestinians.

3. Same old story, different day
The Israelis obviously don't want peace. They prove it over again, and again.

Disgusting.
