PHOENIX - Arizona officials on Monday reopened the investigation into a deputy's explanation of how he was shot in the remote desert south of Phoenix amid speculation it was a hoax timed to enflame the debate over illegal immigration.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office announced its decision Monday after two nationally known forensic pathologists raised questions about a wound the deputy suffered.

2. You're right--it needs to be independent
Sheriff Babeu is a partisan anti-immigrant crusader, and his dep't. can't be trusted to do an objective investigation of its own deputy. He's already investigating Arpaio's top staff, at his buddy, Arpaio's, request. Wonder why Arpaio asked him to do it? *snort*

6. Is there such a thing as an"independent investigator" in Arizona any more?
Does the U of A have a Journalism Department like Northwester that could do it?
