Hyundai Recalls 140,000 Sonata Units (reduction or even total loss of control)

by Anna Zimmerman SEOUL – It looks like the steady stream of product recalls in the US market is going for a year high. After automaker Toyota recalls it’s defective car units, South Korea’s top automaker, Hyundai Motor is following suit. Hyundai announced that they will recall 140,000 Sonata units sold to the American market, due to problems with the steering wheel that could lead to a reduction or even total loss of control.

The automaker made the precautionary measure after 10 of their pilot testers reported problems with the steering column and was pressured by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) when they questioned the company on the steering problem in August. The recall is just a precaution as no injuries has so far been reported yet.

The Sonata model accounts for 35% of the car manufacturer’s sales in the US market, with 128,484 Sonata sedans sold from the period of January to August. It is their biggest selling model. Hyundai, with a plant in Montgomery, Alabama will recall vehicles built from December 11, 2009 to September 10, 2010.

The company said that the worst case scenario for the steering problem is that the “loose connections” may cause drivers to reduce or loss control that may lead to motor crash. According to Lee Sang-Hyun, an analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities, the Sonata recall was unlikely to hurt the automaker’s sales. ” Since potential defects related to assembling are not a significant problem with its quality, it will barely impact Hyundai’s sales,” he told reporters.
