Senators introduce law to ban 'crush' videos of animal cruelty
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) -- Three U.S. senators introduced legislation Monday to specifically ban so-called "crush videos" -- depictions of small animals being tortured to death by humans.

The legislation came in response to a Supreme Court ruling this year striking down a broader congressional law dealing with animal cruelty.

The bi-partisan Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act would criminalize the creation, sale and marketing of these specific kinds of videos. Penalties of up to seven years in prison would be possible.

11. Sadder still that the SC struck down the broader law passed in 1999
It shows how radically to the right Alito and Roberts pulled the court.

13. Not really..
The previous law would have made it illegal to sell any video that depicted activity illegal in the venue where it was watched.

So selling a video of how to hunt deer to a resident of DC could have been prosecuted, because there is no hunting in DC.

It was overly broad. This one seems much more well-targeted (pun intended).

15. ok, that does make some sense
I would never want to watch such a video, but I can see that it shouldn't be illegal.

12. Or fish;
Or birds. My cat caught a mouse the other day. It took about 5 minutes for my cat to kill the mouse. If I had filmed this, put it on YouTube could I have been prosecuted? How about a hunter? If the asshole wounds say a deer and the animal bounds off and dies in agony an hour later with blood and entrails falling out of its body is this torture? How about road kill? A crushed animal crawls 10 feet into a ditch where it may live for several minutes in agony waiting to die. An unwanted pet let out in the middle of the woods or in the middle of a large city intersection where it will die a pretty gruesome death soon?

Come on. Everything that is born, hatched or pupates dies. People sick enough to watch these videos will just find another way to feel republican. This is a feel good law.

With that said, my detractors may find all manner of terrible things to say about me. I remember when 'snuff films' were in the news. They sparked outrage but they supposedly depicted the death of humans. There is about the same outrage here but over animals. Put it into perspective.

14. You make a good point.
I mean, murderers are going to murder, why not just let fate decide? There are always going to be armed robberies, so what's the point in punishing a robber? If someone molests a child, hey, it's likely it would have happened anyway, so where's the harm?

And since your karma is probably really, REALLY bad, why not just sign over all your belongings to me, and kill yourself? You're going to die someday anyway, it might as well be now.

18. What a stupid waste of time
Laws to prevent cruelty to animals already exist. Why are they wasting time adding another law to an already bloated code to outlaw an extremely rare fetish that is already illegal?

20. Agreed. And the idiot who wrote this in the House is my toadstool congressman
A warm bucket of spit has a more distinguished legislative record than Elton Gallegly.

19. I'd like to see the legislation's definition of "animal"
I mean yes it's great that they have this initiative, but I hope it covers all living creatures. Wouldn't want them moving from bunnies and rats to crabs, bugs, etc. We already have plenty of some animals are more equal than others laws on the books. Might as well get it right from the get go on this.
