Emanuel to kick off mayoral campaign with city "listening tour"
Source: Chicago Sun-Times

WASHINGTON--Rahm Emanuel will kick off his Chicago mayoral campaign with a "listening tour" of the city's neighborhoods--to start when he jumps in the high-stakes race for mayor over the weekend.

President Obama is expected to personally announce Emanuel's departure on Friday from the White House--and Emanuel will fly to Chicago over the weekend to finally say he is in the race and to throw himself into the campaign with vigor.

3. I Hope He Gets an Earful
Would Chicago believe that his close ties to the White House give him "pull" or would they look at the record, and decide it was a liability?

4. I'll tell him some things if he comes to a bar in my neighborhood
I'd be interested in meeting him. I'm not going to rag about anything he did in Washington. I'm interested in what he has in mind for running a big city--all its neighborhoods, from Englewood to Andersonville. I want to hear that he's not going to take developers' money. I want to see how he is going to continue the arts agenda here. I want to know about the schools. I hope he's ready to listen.

and we already have a very good potential candidate in Cook County Sheriff, Tom Dart.

Dart is young, personable, is well liked in many parts of the city and has done an excellent job as sheriff.

He is a native Chicagoan (a neighborhood guy) nice looking, has a large family plus he's from one of the powerful political areas of the city.

He hasn't thrown his hat in the ring yet but it should happen very soon. Rahm will look like a expletive deleted DC carpetbagger next to him.

P.S. I like him because he has taken a strong stand against dog fighting. We have quite a nasty problem with that miserable spectacle.

rahm's the only guy around with a 'D' in his politics, who's qualified to sit in richard j. daley's chair. it's like satan's adopted son going back home to rule in hell (no reflection on your city). and, i do feel bad for you folks: the fire, capone, daley sr., & jr.; now this.

22. If he listens instead of talks - good
If he talks while listening - fuck it all

This could be a success or a disaster, its all up to him.

He may be a great Chicago Mayor. He may be one for the books.

Confrontation works better in City politics than in national politics.

24. AP Sources: Emanuel leaving White House on Friday
Source: Washington Post

CHICAGO -- Two people close to Rahm Emanuel said Thursday he will resign as White House chief of staff on Friday, and will begin his campaign for Chicago mayor by meeting with voters in the city on Monday.

The two people familiar with his plans, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not want to pre-empt Emanuel's announcement, said he will return to Chicago over the weekend and begin touring neighborhoods on Monday.

"He intends to run for mayor," one of the people told The Associated Press.

Both people said they did not know when Emanuel would make an official announcement about his mayoral bid but that he would launch a website with a message to Chicago voters in the near future.
