Castle won't wage write-in Del. Senate campaign
Source: Associated Press

Longtime Republican congressman Mike Castle has ruled out a write-in campaign in the U.S. Senate race in Delaware.

Castle is also a former two-term governor and the longest serving congressman in state history. He lost the GOP primary earlier this month in a stunning upset to tea party favorite Christine O'Donnell.

He issued a statement Wednesday night saying he had ruled out a write-in campaign, which many supporters had asked him to consider. The decision brings an end to a political career stretching over four decades.

His decision leaves O'Donnell to face Democrat Chris Coons in November for the Senate seat long held by Joe Biden before he became vice president.

3. He would probably drain more voters from Coons than COD
I imagine Coons is drawing independent voters and moderate Republicans who would have voted for Castle in a Castle vs. Coons election.

Castle back in race would have hurt Coons more than O'Donnell.

4. I agree,. This is good news for us. Having a write-in or 3rd
party candidate almost always spells trouble for us.

5. I don't think a write in would split the ticket that way
The way I see it here in Delaware is that you have the sane Republicans, you have the loony Repubs and loony-pseudo Dems, and the sane Democrats. Any sane Republican who has Delaware's best interest in mind when they go to the polls is going to vote for Coons or ABC (Anybody But Christine). Sane Democrats will definitely votes for Coons, which just leaves us with the Loons and ultra conservative religious voters who can't see past the Bible at the end of their nose.

I think that if Castle was a write in, it would take many of the sane Repubs out of the Coons column, possibly allowing an O'Donnell victory.

8. What Castle actually said was, "I do not believe that seeking office in this manner is in the
best interest of all Delawareans." Interpretation: I am not going to do anything to help O'Donnell win the senate race.
