Jobless Claims Post Decline
Source: The Wall Street Journal

The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits dropped by more than expected last week, although the level of claims still isn't low enough to signal any major improvements in the labor market.

Separately, the U.S. economy was a little stronger in the second quarter than earlier believed, according to the government, but the rate of growth remained anemic as companies' reluctance to hire workers held back the recovery.

Initial unemployment claims fell by 16,000 to 453,000 in the week ended Sept. 25, the Labor Department said in its weekly report Thursday. New claims for the previous week, ended Sept. 18, were revised upward to 469,000 from 465,000. Economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires had predicted new claims would fall by only 5,000.

In a good sign for the labor market, the four-week moving average, which aims to smooth volatility in the data, fell to its lowest level since July 24. The Labor Department said the four-week moving average fell by 6,250 to 458,000 from the prior week's revised average of 464,250.

4. I can't see how 400K+ new jobless every week is good news.
Especially when they revise last week's jobless numbers upward. I suppose this makes the people who subscribe to the Wall Street Journal happy, somehow, but it's not very comforting to the workers in this country.

we need to be adding over 100,000 jobs a month...not cheer a slight decline that is usually adjusted down a couple weeks later!

Just think how many teachers and police and firemen would have lost their jobs if it weren't for the stimulus. It could be a whole lot worse.

I know you're not big on facts, but the numbers don't lie:

Currently it's -40.27

Here, this might help you:

But like I said, don't worry. I'm sure your Lords and Masters you depend on to keep your fantasy of "Recovery" alive will be along at noon or 3PM like they do everyday to prop things back up so you can continue to chide and poke fun at all us naggy "naysayers" who "Hate America."

And no, today does not change the fact that this is a Bubble that that no relevance to the Real Economy, and is not based on anything fundamental or technical.

Back To You, in The Spin Room, already in progress.

Good gawd, can you be any further disconnected from what so many of US are dealing with?

29. Thanks DRose
But I'm not optimistic. At age 57, my chances aren't good, to say the least. Cripes, I don't even get an acknowledgment reply when I submit my apps and resume any more, let alone an interview. Having the righties call me "lazy" and the DINOs call me a "whiner" on top of trying to hang on to some of my dignity, is just plain more than I can stomach. Shame on them both, one is no better than the other.

31. Well, I needed work, even though I had sort of retired at 62.
Not many people hiring old hippies my age. In fact, I had no luck at all. So, I started a new business, like I've done many other times in my life. Now, I'm working, earning, and have dealt with the problem in the only way I know that really works.

Since I have no idea what your skills might be, I can't necessarily suggest that you do the same, but it's worth considering. I got my first check two weeks after I decided to hang my shingle out again, and now have several clients who keep me busy. It's a viable alternative to normal employment. I haven't worked a "job" since 1974. I haven't gotten rich, but I'm working and keeping my head above water. My wife does the same thing, and we've been working for ourselves most of our lives.

Good luck with your search. But, if you can't find a regular job, try creating your own.

40. Actually...
.. a "regular job" is my best hope, as my shingle says carpenter, remodeler on it. I get an occasional deck (none this year) or small remodel job, but with most everybody else also hurting, those are rare and getting rarer. I appreciate the good thoughts though, they beat the heck out of being called derogatory names.

14. From the DOL's Employment and Training Administration:
Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report {09/30/2010}

In the week ending Sept. 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 453,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 469,000. The 4-week moving average was 458,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the previous week's revised average of 464,250.

30. Question for someone smarter than me.
I went on the Department of Labor site to look at their data on unemployment. Initial Claims "Seasonally Adjusted" is 453,000, but "Not Seasonally Adjusted" is only 370,147, 83,000 less. For continuing claims, it comes in at SA 4,457,000 but NSA 3,766,450, 691,000 less. Am I just dense or is there a reason for this? I would think in the government computers it should be pretty easy to pull up a report that says how many people are drawing benefits for the first time or still drawing benefits for a longer period. Why seasonally adjust the unemployment figures?
