McDonald's, officials say insurance report false
Source: Reuters

DETROIT (Reuters) – McDonald's Corp and federal health officials denied a newspaper report that the fast food chain may cut health insurance for its nearly 30,000 hourly workers.

The Wall Street Journal, citing a company memo, reported that McDonald's might cut the insurance unless U.S. regulators waived a requirement of new healthcare legislation championed by President Barack Obama.

McDonald's officials called the report "completely false."

Just some McCrap from the Wall Street Journal.

I'm not much of a McFood McFan (disclosure: I'm vegetarian), but the McInsurance report is bogus. Consider the source. I don't believe anything the Wall Street Journal publishes - all Republican hogwash.

1. The wall between editorial and news at the Journal continues to collapse
It's a highbrow Fox News at this point.

2. That's a shame too
I always found the editorial board at the WSJ to be completely idiotic but the reporting published in that paper was top notch. I think everyone knew that the second Rupert Murdoch got his greasy claws on it the quality was going to go right down the toilet.

It took less time than I thought but that's probably because of the immediate exodus of most of the real talent that existed in the newsroom.

3. The WSJ doesn't even HAVE a wall - they've got a fiber net feed from Editorial to News.
If you have a parakeet, there's not much better to line the cage with.

28. Agree
The downside of it is I renewed my WSJ subscription last month. Had this story run back then I wouldn't have.

The WSJ used to have an objective news department.

5. WHAT boycott? I don't eat there anyway, but that's because they don't serve "food".
But seriously, what boycott? Wall Street Journal or McDoodies?

12. Both.
It's a boycott of 1. Me. I seldom went there but quit entirely when they started having Fox on the big screen. Or anyway, when I noticed that they did.

14. I honestly don't know if the McDs around here even HAVE TVs - it has been that long.
They certainly didn't the LAST time I was in one - that was to pee if I recall correctly - might have been for coffee.

6. I actually do believe this report. I bet McDonalds is floating a trial balloon.
I bet they are calculating the response right now to this idea.

8. It's junk insurance anyway
Many McDonald's hourly workers are covered by the "mini-med" policies and pay around $14 per week for a plan capping annual benefits at $2,000 per year, or a similar plan in which they pay $32 per week and annual benefits are capped at $10,000, the Journal said.

9. You just quoted the source that lied in the first place. From what I've heard, McD's insurance okay
Fuck the WSJ and anything they have to say. It seems the entire report was just propaganda against the Obama healthcare legislation. "Obama's goin' ta kill granny when she gets sick flippin' boigers."

I've known a lot of people who have (and still do) work at McD's and the insurance was one of the things that attracted them to that shithole instead of an even worse shithole like Burger Blech.

27. You get the same from the horse mouth
Basic Plan - The Basic Plan reimburses you for covered medical expenses incurred for sickness or off-the-job accidental injury. After you meet the annual deductible of $150 per person, the plan pays 70% of the allowable or usual and customary (U&C) covered medical expenses up to a maximum of $2,000 during the 12-month policy year.

17. Never Believe Anything Until It Is Officially Denied.
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 12:09 PM by TheWatcher
Many times trial balloons will be floated in front of the sheep to see if they take notice, and to take a gauge on how likely something can be gotten away with.

If McDonald's feels the coast is clear, and after enough time has safely passed in the Untied States Of Distraction, they will quietly go forward with this if that's what they want to do, likely incrementally, so there will be little fanfare.

Corporations will do whatever they want, and We The People, sadly, will do nothing to stop them.

Neither will our so-called leadership, who are for all intents and purposes owned by them.

It's that simple.

18. Yup. I said the same up thread. Furthermore, I'm surprised this isn't happening with other corps yet
Administering insurance plans is a pain in the ass for big corporations - these micro-med plans have to be a major time drain for little "return". Besides, it costs $$ for big corporations to offer health insurance. With 2014 right around the corner, they are off the hook having any obligation to offer them at all. Everyone will be mandated to buy a policy, and insurance companies will be mandated to offer them - big corporations just have to get out of the way.

I truly believe this was a trial balloon and that McDonalds fully plans to eliminate these. The WSJ reporter who got the inside scoop on that HR meeting is probably pretty mad that it's being walked back now but he'll be validated in time.

19. McDonald's has 31,000 resturants and 30,000 insured employees
Methinks McDonald's had to walk it back when they realized they were at risk of losing their 'assistant managers' pool.

they've always been the direct mouthpiece of corporate america's boardrooms, especially when they are bitching about some "anti-capatalist" laws...
