News Corp. gave $1 million to pro-GOP group

News Corp., the parent company of Fox News, contributed $1 million this summer to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the business lobby that has been running an aggressive campaign in support of the Republican effort to retake Congress, a source close to the company told POLITICO.

It was the second $1 million contribution the company has made this election cycle to a GOP-aligned group. In late June it gave that amount to the Republican Governors Association.

The parent companies of other media companies such as Disney (which owns ABC) and General Electric (which owns NBC) have also made political contributions, but typically in far smaller chunks, and split between Democrats and Republicans.

In the past, News Corp. has also spread its donations between candidates of both parties. The huge gift to the RGA raised questions among some media critics about whether News Corp. had crossed over an inappropriate line for a media company. The second donation is likely to rekindle that debate – and to make both News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch and Fox News even more of a liberal target.

5. That isn't his job. It is the White House Correspondent Associations job.
Everybody needs to stop assigning him jobs and requirements which he can in no way actually do and then getting all pissy when the undoable doesn't get done.

Surely the business lobbies have enough money coming in from their corporate masters.

Unless... Faux are the GOP.

3. So many great Ads our Dems have the opportunity to Run against all this SCUM!
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 09:10 PM by KoKo
But in 2000, 2004...I never saw the kind of ad that could get Dems Motivated. It was said we didn't have the money to go against the "Machine, Powers that Be, Repug Right, Christian Right."

Will this time be different? I've read that the Supreme Court's Decision allows anyone who has enough money and a good PR Firm to put an ad out there and they don't even have to do a DISCLAIMER as to who paid for the add anymore. I actually saw such an add running on MSNBC..totally against Dems but with little kids holding flags and warning that America is not what it used to be and that people need to STAND UP and make America's future better for their kids." It was a tear jerker...I got choked up watching it...but at the end there was no attribution as to who sponsored the ad and paid for it. I knew it was Repug...but which group?

How can this be?

7. Fox News are pigs.
They are a political advocacy group and should be regulated accordingly. They should lose their press credentials everywhere.

10. Murdoch doubles News Corp support for Republicans• News Corporation gives $1m to anti-Democrat campa
Source: The Guardian

Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation has doubled its backing of the Republican party in advance of next month's mid-term elections by awarding $1m to an interest group that is leading the attack on Democratic candidates through political TV advertising.

The donation, revealed first by the website Politico, was made to the United States Chamber of Commerce, which has a stated intention to spend $75m on November's elections. Most of its money has gone into "attack adverts" targeted against Democratic candidates.

This is the second downpayment in three months by Murdoch to the Republican cause in its battle to give Barack Obama a bloody nose in the 2 November elections to the Senate and House of Representatives. In June, News Corporation gave $1m to the Republican Governors Association.

That donation led to widespread criticism that Murdoch was blatantly in breach of journalistic ethics. His Fox News channel claims to be "fair and balanced" in its reporting of political races, yet when the association of Democratic governors called on the TV channel to add a disclaimer to its coverage, revealing that its proprietor was funding the Republicans, it made no such concession.

11. And if you look past all the bias
You will see that both parties receive SIGNIFICANT donations from media organizations. Pesonally I don't think any media organization should be allowed to donate to any political party or politician under any circumstances.

But if you honestly think Fox is the only biased news or media source in the states you can't see bias.

Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 08:38 PM by TomCADem
I doubt it, since President Obama has appointed FCC board members who are tougher on media consolidation than Bush appointees.

18. I've had it with this non-sense ...

Just to show how ridiculous this SCOTUS decision was;
In 2012, we should put up a Corporation to run for Senate and Congress.
Next time a Supreme Court Justice dies or retires, we should have Obama nominate a Corporation.
An Out-Of-Country Corporation, with liberal leanings since the Supreme Court did not specifically
rule them out, like Nokia or Siemens or maybe one of the many British Corps.

Them maybe someone, somewhere with authority can make a decision to not allow Corporate $$$'s in
elections, since they are not real persons.

Just a thought.
