Shinnecock win federal recognition
Source: LI Business News

The federal government today officially recognized the Shinnecock Indian Nation, a decision ending decades of efforts and paving the way for the tribe to pursue plans to obtain various federal benefits and proceed with its efforts to open a casino.

The Interior Board of Indian Appeals of the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs granted the tribe federal recognition today in a historic decision.

The board ruled in favor of the tribe after determining that challenges to its federal recognition were made without legal standing.

“The first day of October will live forever with the Shinnecock people as we have just become the 565th tribe in the United States Of America!,” Lance Gumbs, one of the tribe’s three trustees, wrote on FaceBook. “Our federal recognition has been granted today October 1st 2010. Thank the Creator.”

1. Hola, Relatives. Do something healthier and more sustainable than a casino

I mean, really, relatives. Do you think a casino is the answer?

Really?

Come on. Snap out of it. Take a deep breath. Clear your head. Listen not to the casino bells and registers, but to your Good Spirit...

What other ways might there be for tribal nations to use their sovereign status for profit?
