China calls on Japan to 'maintain relations'
Source: AFP

China has called on Japan to "maintain the full spectrum of relations" between the two nations amid a damaging territorial row that has rumbled on for more than three weeks.

"China attaches great importance to its relations with Japan. We hope Japan will work with China to maintain the full spectrum of bilateral relations," said Ma Zhaoxu, the chief spokesman for the ministry of foreign affairs.

The statement came after Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan called on China to behave as a "responsible member of the international community" as the two sides work through their worst spat in several years, centred on a disputed island chain.

In what is perhaps the most conciliatory statement to come from Beijing since the standoff began with the September 8 arrest of a Chinese trawlerman, Ma nevertheless reiterated China's claim to the islands in comments posted on the foreign affairs ministry website.

2. There have been many comments that have disgusted me made on DU
but this one was about as disgusting as they come. If this was supposed to be funny, it wasn't. If you tried to be ironic, you failed miserably.

The Japanese, not just in Nanjing (南京) but in Dongbei (东北),Shanghai (上海) and most everyplace else they conquered in China, decimated the Chinese with reckless abandon and willful disregard.

On such massacre, Changjiao (长焦) in Hunan Province (湖南省), in three days, the Japanese raped, pillaged and executed over 30,000 people.

Before you make such a flip comment, remember that the Japanese have had a long history of slaughtering people in their attempts to control Asia: Chinese (Port Arthur), Singaporeans (Sook Ching), Pinoys (Manila), Aussie (Banka Island), Burmese (Kalagong), and Americans (Parit Sulong).

Your comment is disgusting.

Yes, I live in China.

4. Thanks, Suji.
It's the 'wilful disregard', as you put it, that really hurts, isn't it.

7. It wasn't offensive.
And, not that it's at all relevant, but I lived in China for years, including Nanjing.

6. Publicly they will make up....

...but privately relations between to two are probably heavily damaged if not shot. Japan is probably already making plans to not be put in this same situation again (probably by starting to look at Africa for rare minerals instead for starters).
