ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — A police spokesman says at least 12 people have died after dual car bombs struck Nigeria's capital during celebrations marking its 50th anniversary of independence.
Abuja police spokesman Jimoh Moshood tells The Associated Press that 11 officers were critically injured in the blasts that hit the federal capital on Friday. He said Saturday that at least 17 others suffered injuries.
Moshood says police are searching for clues about who planted the bombs.
The attacks claimed by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, the main militant group in Nigeria's oil-rich and restive southern delta, came as President Goodluck Jonathan and other dignitaries sat at a celebration only a 10-minute walk away.
