Thousands gather in DC in support of Dems agenda
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Tapping into the same anger that fuels the tea party movement, a coalition of progressive and civil rights groups marched Saturday on the Lincoln Memorial and pledged to support Democrats struggling to keep power on Capitol Hill.

"We are together. This march is about the power to the people," said MSNBC host Ed Schultz. "It is about the people standing up to the corporations. Are you ready to fight back?"

In a fiery speech that opened the "One Nation Working Together" rally on the National Mall, Schultz blamed Republicans for shipping jobs overseas and curtailing freedoms. He borrowed some of conservative commentator Glenn Beck's rhetoric and vowed to "take back our country."

"This is a defining moment in America. Are you American?" Schultz told the raucous crowd of thousands. "This is no time to back down. This is time to fight for America."

9. 'One Nation' rally draws thousands to Mall to counter conservatives
Source: Washington Post

By Krissah Thompson and Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, October 2, 2010; 1:17 PM

A rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial kicked off Saturday with tens of thousands of progressive activists hoping to energize supporters worried about the conservative tea party movement and the possibility that Democrats could lose control of Congress.

The "One Nation Working Together" march is the culmination of months of planning begun by civil rights organizations and labor unions. In recent weeks, more than 400 supporting groups signed on to the rally set to span four hours beginning at noon and featuring speeches, poetry and musical entertainment.

The groups backing the march - including the National Council of La Raza, the NAACP, the AFL-CIO, the Service Employees International Union, USAction and the U.S. Student Association - are looking to make a political statement in response to conservative commentator Glenn Beck's rally in August. That gathering partly filled the Mall with tens of thousands of his supporters, and tea party groups across the country have held anti-tax rallies.

By mid-morning Saturday, "One Nation" supporters were already heading to the Mall. On the city's Metro system, which opened an hour early to accommodate the crowds, rally attendees carried signs like "We March for Hope Not Hate" and "Standing Up for All the Change We Voted For." Others wore blue "One Nation Working Together" T-shirts handed out by the American Federation of Teachers union.

11. Its too bad the President didn't decide to attend. That would really have brought out
a ton of support... and his message is about inclusion in a positive productive method. There is nothing about this rally that is against the President. He should have attended or sent a representative like Joe Biden to speak to the crowd.. But these idiot politicians don't take the opportunity for a great ad.. People of all backgrounds coming together to build the country... All those pukes get up there and speak (Palin, Bachman).. why are our Dems so afraid of standing with their base?

18. the corporate media
are focusing on the GOP winning 24/7. The corporate polls I believe are pretty much wrong. I'm watching CNN, MSNBC and Cspan, and of course CNN is commenting that this event "One Nation" rally is political. MSNBC is a little better in getting the message out - "we the people" and America.

72. Good Morning America today was trying its best to discredit today's event.
They kept harping that the "One Nation" event has to outdraw Beck's lily-white lovefest in order to prove that the teabaggers aren't setting the political tone this year. Plus, they were quoting Beck in discrediting "One Nation" who said people attending were including communists and gays. Like, Beck has no biases in this. And like Beck is such a great judge of things.

This is a fantastic interview with Ben Jealous (President of
the NAACP). He is interviewed by Free Speech TV's Herb Boyd
and Marc Steiner from the National Mall during the One Nation
Working Together March. Powerful stuff. This is the kind of
movement building we need in this country leading up to the
mid-term elections this November.

20. AP has done itself proud in the article, as always! I'd like to ask you,
"Did the Becksters "pack" the place?"

From AP's Philip Elliott:
".....More than 400 organizations — ranging from labor unions to faith, environmental and gay rights groups — partnered for the event, which comes one month after Beck packed the same space with conservatives and tea party-style activists.

Beck and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin gathered near the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech to urge a vast crowd to embrace traditional values."
How could the earlier rally be "vast" and this one not so much?

Holy moly!

I DVR'd it and am just starting to hear the whole thing now. Going to enjoy the whole damned thing, too.

Thanks, Xipe Totec, for the O.P. and thread. Glad to see AP is keeping its standards high, as usual. <gasp> <choke>

71. I don't think they'll change minds that are already made up
And the other side has far more of those. We're going to get clobbered, but I have moved past that point, and am looking at it as an opportunity to replace Blue Dogs and DINO's with true progressives, the way the tea partiers have replaced establishment country clubber Republicons with their candidates.

If the other side can get rid of it's dead wood, so can we. We have a President who is more than wiling to veto their excesses, that will make up the bulk of his activism during the last half of his first term. If the baggers are on display, the media will turn on them like they have turned on the President.

25. Now that's a GOOD rally for once!
I've read all over the news that "hundreds of thousands" attended this just like for the Glenn Beck rally. Except that today's rally made a whole lot more sense. I'm talking about uniting for health care and education and moving the people forward versus attacking the government and non-stop religious hooey.

43. This is giving me more HOPE then I have had in awhile...
My Hope that Democrats will not lose many seats on NOV 2nd and the Tea Party will be proved to be just a fad, a joke of intolerant people, that had their say and were roundly rejected by true American Patriots.

On Nov 3rd we can safely get on with fixing this country and there will be no second guessing on the Presidents agenda. We will have lower energy costs through green jobs, we will revitalize this economy by rebuilding the infrastructure, we will tax the rich corporate masters and use that money to help the most needy among us, and use it to create more jobs, we will have better healthcare, and a cleaner environment, more people will be seen as equals under the law with the repeal of DADT and DOMA....

Yes We Can...

63. The People Are Mobilizing
I just watched coverage of the One Nation Working Together
march on Free Speech TV and I am completely blown away by the
turnout and diversity of organizations and people that came
together on the National Mall today. It was so inspiring to
see all of these people mobilize and come together to demand
the change that we voted for. The spirit of collaboration,
comradery, and optimism is something that the fearmongering
Glen Beck rallies can never march. In case you missed it,
check out this clip of:

Edited on Sat Oct-02-10 05:55 PM by ProSense
One Nation Working Together Official March Release

WASHINGTON (October 2)--- As of 3:00pm, an estimated 175,000+ Americans - representing all 50 states and our country's great diversity - joined together at the Lincoln memorial to re-claim the American dream and raise their voices for jobs, justice and public education. One Nation Working Together released the following statement:

" It's inspiring to look out and see so many people -- even more than we even expected -- from so many different places coming together as one nation in support of jobs, justice and public education," said Leah Daughtry, national campaign director of One Nation Working Together. "This is an important moment in the progressive movement - as each person returns home and continues to rally our fellow Americans as we head to the ballot box in November and re-commit ourselves to our common future.

"This is true democracy and good old-fashioned organizing at work."

According to the AP:

Organizers claimed they had as many participants as Beck's rally. But Saturday's crowds were less dense and didn't reach as far to the edges as they did during Beck's rally. The National Park Service stopped providing official crowd estimates in the 1990s.

Of course the organizers of the event are going to try to inflate their numbers. I would trust a source without a stake in the outcome such as the AP.

122. Americans gather to promote hope, call for jobs, education, immigration reform
Source: Sky Valley Chronicle

TENS OF THOUSANDS FLOOD LINCOLN MEMORIAL IN “ANTIDOTE” TO TEA PARTY

Tens of thousands of Americans – this time around made up of many self described progressives or liberals – came to present what they said was an “antidote” to the tea party movement and as a show of support for the President and Democrats in Congress.

Carrying signs that read “We march for hope not hate,” “Support our President”, Justice for all” and “Stop robbing from the middle class to pay the rich,” these Americans wanted to present a case that not only said the Glenn Becks and Sarah Palins of the world have the matter wrong, but there are just as many people in the country, if not more, who are opposed to their actions, tactics and political movement.

This rally, a show of force as much as anything else, was presented by a coalition of some 400 groups ranging from labor unions to environmental groups, civil rights groups and groups seeking immigration reform. There were many people of color at this rally.

The rallying cry was jobs and education, justice, immigration reform and to stop handing the country over to the rich and large corporations.
