Big Brown-Whitman debate on KGO radio Tuesday cancelled
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

The big radio debate between California gubernatorial candidatees -- Democrat Jerry Brown and Republican Meg Whitman -- which had been scheduled Tuesday at 10 a.m. on the Ronn Owens' show has been cancelled, the station says.

Sterling Clifford, Brown's spokesman, said the debate was only a "discussion" between the two candidates, and "by mutual agreement," the two have decided not to pursue it.

But the debate was announced confirmed by KGO and Owens, one of the country's leading radio broadcasters, after the June primary - and neither of the candidates ever suggested they would not participate.

... All this comes on the heels of Saturday's Univision debate in Fresno, dominated by the discussion of Whitman's hiring of an undocumented immigrant as her housekeeper for nine years.

Brown put her on the mat. Meg Whitman is still looking for her teeth.

2. Doesn't look good for witchman
Regardless of why this "debate" was cancelled, it appears that she is running and hiding after the incident with her illegal employee became public and after she basically tanked her first two debates.

If she ain't smart enough to realize how inept this makes her look she ain't smart enough to be the governor's housekeeper let alone the governor.

whether it's true or not, that's how it appears. aw, well, to bad for meg-a-bucks. Things don't always go your way no matter how much money you throw it at the problem.

7. Likely reflects that internal polling shows the second debate to have been a disaster
The segments posted of her and Brown's back and forth on the maid issue really were incredibly good for Brown. I wonder if this is like a call for "time out" because she is hoping this will go away or she can focus group to find "believable" answers - to indefensible charges. This seems to be another case where simply conceding immediately - and taking a small hit (the rw won't vote for Brown) would have been better than this. (Not to mention, wrong as it would be - why didn't she pay her off fabulously on the condition that she quietly return to Mexico - back when she first thought of running.)

Brown was great in that debate. If I'm remembering correctly, that was the debate when Whitman talked about better regulations for immigration and Brown responded, 'Well of course, Miss Whitman didn't regulate herself.' That was a Lloyd Bentsen-Dan Quayle moment, every bit as good.

I had the same thought that you did on the separation. Why wouldn't Whitman pony up $50,000 or so as a severance? I think a lot of people will wonder that. If she'd been caught for giving generous severance, it wouldn't have hurt that much, she could have defended it strongly, and people would have compared that to how their employers have treated them in the past. Whitman showed her mean spirited side and also a notable degree of outright stupidity in how she handled this.

It's important that Brown win. He's got some ideas and can think outside of the box, which is what California needs. He's also got the experience. His father, Pat Brown, was the governor that helped build California into what it was at its very best, imho.

20. Because its important to never ever under any conditions and for any and
all reasons to try to buy off someone who should be easily cowed. Money is not meant to be spent {except sparingly and delivered as charitable not earned) on labor or silence of labor but on goods, vacations, or accruing more money.

9. At least you got more than 1 debate
Here in Arizona, the clueless Governor-by-succesion Jan "deer in the headlights" Brewer refused to debate anymore with Democratic candidate Terry Goddard.

12. Ronn Owens is an interesting puzzle himself.
This might be just the push it takes for him to come down hard on Megzilla. Ronn is a smart guy, but in spite of being technically a Democrat is very right leaning. One thing he can't stand is a guest who disses him.

There's been blood on the floor over this kind of thing before.

15.  Ronn with two n's is a political lightweight
He determines his political compass by placing a wet finger in the air.

Interesting, 'blowhard' Burns and 'The smartest man in the world' may have to temper their opinions on Whitman over the next week or three. Burns, is already walking it back a bit; he's pissed at Whitman for balking.

21. I tuned in, pretty disappointing.
The discussion was pretty bland, all things being what they are. Ronn's consultant hadn't even heard the many stories about Meg's brats' shenanigans. How can you not be aware of the little monsters and be in politics?
