Malfunction Causes Sewage Spill in Texas

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- A malfunction at a north Texas water treatment plant Wednesday caused tens of millions of gallons of raw sewage to bubble up from manholes, form pools in low-lying areas and flow into the Trinity River.

Officials said a gate that covers a pipeline leading into the River Authority's waste water treatment plant broke Wednesday morning and blocked the flow of sewage.

An estimated 50 million to 70 million gallons of black liquid flowed into the Trinity River and covered parts of the Twin Wells Golf Course in Irving, just west of Dallas.

Comment: Perhaps the wrath of god?

9. Okay environmental activists who have tracked Texas
(particularly the orwellian reversals and voluntary programs in Texas under W)...

Is there any connection to specific rolebacks (or blocks) in regulations that contributed to the conditions that led to this "spill"? Perhaps just purely an accident? Or perhaps policies (at the behest of industry... are sewage/water treatment plants public utitilities or have they been privatized?) helped set the conditions for this event? If tied to policy, then we should follow this event - tie it to the policy - keep track of the eventual costs - and pass it on to candidates running against bush and bushy related office holders and office seekers.

10. Milwaukee Dumped 9 million gallons in Lake Michigan last week
And will do it ten more times this year. The DNR allows MMSD (Miwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District) to "legally" dump "partially" treated sewage into Lake Michigan. Dumps of over 75 million have occured and included millions of gallons of unfiltered raw sewage. Many have been fighting the DNR and MMSD to change this legal dumping by MMSD wich is privatized by a company called United Water. It is suspected that Unitied Water's bottom line benfits from dumping. It certianly is more efficient that actually treating the sewage.

Reasons for dumping have included, several "oops" human error, faulty gates and the potential of sewer back ups in wealthy neighborhoods. They always have an excuse.

So when you visit Door County this summer and wonder why the beaches are closed because of high bacteria levels you can suspect MMSD and milwaukee's routine dumping. Even though the DNR has "studied" the e-coli problem and bacteria levels on beaches they seem to keep finding that it is seagull droppings that are the problem. Not the millions and millions of gallons of human shit they spew into the lake all summer long.

One person saw a sewage slick of condoms, tampons and feces 1/2 mile wide and two miles long after on such dumping and still it continues. Another fiserman took a bag of fecal matter to MMSD, and still it continues.

If you dump your porta potty into the Lake you would be fined hundreds of dollars even reliving yourself over the side can result in huge fines. So boaters are very careful not to cause any pollution. But MMSD can dump liwuid shit that can fill five football field size swimming pools ten feet deep into the lake and get nothing more than a tally mark on a chalk board.

Gotta love privatization.
