Angle: Muslim law taking hold in parts of US
Edited on Thu Oct-07-10 05:51 PM by OmahaBlueDog
Source: AP, via Yahoo News

LAS VEGAS – U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle told a crowd of supporters that the country needs to address a "militant terrorist situation" that has allowed Islamic religious law to take hold in some American cities.

Her comments came at a rally of tea party supporters in the Nevada resort town of Mesquite last week after the candidate was asked about Muslims angling to take over the country, and marked the latest of several controversial remarks by the Nevada Republican.

In a recording of the rally provided to The Associated Press by the Mesquite Local News, a man is heard asking Angle : "I keep hearing about Muslims wanting to take over the United States ... on a TV program just last night, I saw that they are taking over a city in Michigan and the residents of the city, they want them out. They want them out. So, I want to hear your thoughts about that."

Angle responds that "we're talking about a militant terrorist situation, which I believe it isn't a widespread thing, but it is enough that we need to address, and we have been addressing it."

I always used to say that it was no surprise that Germany had a Hitler, but it was just shocking that he had followers.

America is infected with the same reason-resistant strain of pure evil now.

It festers and grows in the Southern Baptist church.

11. Look out! The Muslims have taken over a ghost town!
FRANKFORD, TEXAS. Frankford was nine miles northwest of Richardson in extreme southwestern Collin County. Settlement of the area began around a campsite on the Shawnee Trail near a small spring on Halls Branch, used in the 1850s and 1860s as a stopping point and watering hole for traildrivers and other travelers......The St. Louis Southwestern Railway bypassed the town in the late 1880s, however, and many Frankford residents moved to Addison, Plano, and other nearby communities. In 1904 the Frankford post office was closed, and in 1907 its lodge hall, which had served as a nondenominational church, was moved to Addison. A second church, built in the 1890s, continued to serve a predominantly Methodist congregation until 1924. By the mid-1930s the town was no longer shown on county highway maps. Its church building was restored in 1963 by the Frankford Cemetery Association, which arranged for the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion to worship there. The city of Dallas annexed the area in 1975, and in 1990 local children attended the Plano schools. All that remained of the community in 1990 was the Frankford Church and Cemetery, adjoined by residences on three sides and by the Bent Tree Country Club to the south.

45. AND THEY'RE TAKING OVER TEXAS, TOO!!!!
(sorry for the all-caps; have to keep it that way at work ;))

MUSLIMS. Texas has the eighth-largest Muslim population in the United States. In 1990 there were approximately 140,000 Muslims in Texas, which represented 0.7 percent of the state population and 2.8 of the total Muslim population in the United States. Most Muslims are concentrated in the urban centers of the state. Houston has some twenty-two Islamic centers and mosques and a Muslim population of 57,000, and Dallas has fifteen centers and 30,000 Muslims. The Muslim population is 4,000 in Fort Worth and 3,000 in Arlington. Austin and San Antonio each have 5,000, El Paso has 1,500, and there are small Muslim communities in Bryan-College Station, Corpus Christi, and Kingsville. Among the more prominent Islamic organizations in the state are the Muslim Students Association, the Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim Arab Youth Association, the Islamic Circle of North America, and the Al Quaran-Was-Sunnah Society.

12. The man believes that militant Muslims have taken over an American city?
And are forcing the white people out? He sincerely believes that this has already happened?

I really thought I could no longer be surprised by these people, but this seems to be some sort of new low. It's like War Of the Worlds, but with right-wing media perpetrating this hoax on these absymally stupid people. The level of ignorance of the teabaggers is simply beyond my comprehension. They seem to know nothing, and will fall for absolutely anything!

26. Okay, I've heard of a couple of incidents...
one where Christians were prophesying at a festival the Muslims were having...how would the Christians react if Muslims came to one of their festivals and tried to convert them? Another about a guy with a gun, in a park...I understand there is nothing illegal about that, since open carry is legal there...although I will say this one was hinky...but no more than what goes on here with the bored Christian kids in two of our parks...

52. I wasn't even referring to the publicized ones
The proselytizing thing was actually overblown a bit. It's more of the stuff that's been happening to the people we have doing work in there. Trying to work during prayers, trying to work in areas the Muslims don't want "Outsiders," etc. We've had female account executives aggressively bullied and harassed, to the extent we've placed them all on accounts outside those areas. The publicized incidents like Christians proselytizing was more a case of people trying to create exposure. The real problems down there are those that you don't usually hear about.

The effects are actually spilling over into towns like Hamtramk.

30. Oh, you mean like dry counties?
Because that's what the muslins want to do: take away your alcohol. Now, let's see.... where are the terrorist counties in America?

Oh! They're right exactly where the bible-thumping conservative assholes live. What a coincidence! Or maybe not, since the only major difference between conservative Muslim assholes and conservative Christian assholes is the magical sky pixie to whom they pay tribute.

Both want to restrict your rights and freedoms; both are willing to resort to the law to control your behavior. Both think that their leprechaun's imaginary proclamations are the very word of law, and cannot understand why you won't follow that law (and not the law of some other leprechaun). Both consider you to be less of a person for sticking to more logical, workable beliefs.

And the punchline is that the only infidels they hate worse than you is each other.

Maybe I should just stop here.

50. "the rise of Islamophobia and the far right in Europe--and the lessons it holds for the the left in
the US."

http://socialistworker.org/2010/10/07/threat-of-the-right-in-europe

(Geert) WILDERS WAS one of the highlighted speakers at the September 11th rally against the proposed Islamic center in downtown Manhattan called by Tea Party bigots, where he called on his audience to "defend itself against the powers of darkness, the force of hatred and the blight of ignorance."

This should come as no surprise. The far right in the U.S. not only collaborates with its counterparts in Europe, but it is also learning the lessons of their electoral victories.

Pamela Geller, whose group Stop Islamization of America was largely responsible for polarizing the discussion around the proposed Islamic center in downtown Manhattan, is not only a fan of Wilders (and the feeling is mutual given his glowing blurb for the book she co-authored on the Obama presidency), but an admirer of open fascists and street gangs such as the English Defense League that routinely attack Muslims and immigrants.

The Tea Party has clearly taken a few pages from the European right. They have learned that in the context of a prolonged economic crisis, racism and the politics of scapegoating can enable them to reach a wider audience. Thus, anti-immigrant groups such as the Minutemen have started to appear at Tea Party rallies and events. Similarly, Geller who identifies as a Tea Party person spoke at the Tennessee Tea Party convention in May.

60. I regret intruding on the consensus, but...
Is there any part of the demonstrably real anxiety that a lot of Americans feel towards Muslims, and towards Islam, that can/should be acknowledged by the political left as a reasonable concern?

For example, when an American cartoonist has to go ghost and change their identity on the advice of the FBI because of a fatwa, is it not reasonable for some people to be concerned? Yes?

So what if the political left acknowledged some of the concerns that people actually have, and addressed them, rather than dismissing all such concerns as deliberate or inadvertent veiled manifestations of racism and bigotry.

61. There's a world of difference between what you are saying and what Angle is saying
Yes - there are legitimate criticisms of the Islamic community here and abroad (as there are of the Christian community, here and abroad). That's not what's being said - Angle is saying that there are portions of the US where US citizens are, in essence, living under Islamic law. That is complete BS.
