An associate of Jerry Brown calls Meg Whitman a "whore" over pension reform
Source: Los Angeles Times

In a private conversation that was inadvertently taped by a voicemail machine, an associate of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown can be heard referring to his Republican opponent Meg Whitman as a “whore” for cutting a deal protecting law enforcement pensions as the two candidates competed for police endorsements.

The comment came after Brown called the Los Angeles Police Protective League in early September to ask for its endorsement. He left a voicemail message for Scott Rate, a union official. Brown apparently believed he had hung up the phone, but the connection remained intact and the voice mail machine captured an ensuing conversation between Brown and his aides.

... The tape was released to The Times by the Los Angeles police union.

Brown campaign spokesman Sterling Clifford, confirming the tape’s authenticity, said that Brown was responding to the notion of accusing Whitman of cutting a deal to gain endorsements, not to the use of the word “whore.” The campaign was trying to determine the identity of the second speaker, he added.

You think they'd be more careful.

At least it wasn't Jerry.

3. Two things ...
1) Who the fuck cares ....

2) Using the typical euphemism of our time, calling someone a 'whore' by selling out for personal gain (in this case an endorsement) is understood by the general population for what it is.

In other words: Next story ...

Record Label: Corporate Whore

THE MUSIC: Guitar driven, melodic rock with catchy hooks that keep people humming the tunes for days. Corporate Whore is a mainstream, radio-friendly rock band whose new album has been compared to platinum selling artists 3 Doors Down and Matchbox Twenty. This first major album represents a coming of age for the young band as they experimented with the styles and influences of all the band members. Corporate Whore has managed to pull those influences into a focused and driven album that speaks of the rawest aspects of life, from the struggle for success to the expression of love. "Runaway", the first single off the album is a solid modern rock song with a driving melody and powerful chorus. The album is rounded out with the power ballad, "Needed" and guitar driven riffs in "You Want" and "One Shot".

4. tape sounded altered to me & LA Times falsely attributes the audio to one person
Edited on Fri Oct-08-10 02:11 AM by tomm2thumbs

the LA Times attribute an entire phrase to a single person that is obviously two people's voices/conversations overlapping... if you listen carefully, Brown is asking if they should use information about Meg's deal that she'll do secret deals in an advertisement.

Brown asks about the ad 'what about saying that?' and a voice drops on top of that from someone else... but they attribute that entire line to a single person, which is entirely wrong. The Times says: 'a second voice interjects “What about saying she’s a whore?”' which is 100% incorrect, and it easily heard by listening to the tape.

Additionally, they say Brown says “Well, I’m going to use that” - whereas I hear "Well, I didn't use that" - an entirely different thing.

I call BULLSHIT ON THE TAPE given that dropped-in voice appears no where else in the entire tape except that dropped in line.

_______

They don't do reporting at the LA Times, obviously, as it is easy to hear the difference of the two voices overlapping, so I can only guess someone is trying to pad their budgets by doing a hit piece?

let's face it, politics can be dirty and I could see Meg trying to buy faked footage (knowingly or otherwise) to make her other problems disappear

Such a non-story but it will get blown up and will take away peoples attention from all of Meg's craziness. So fucking stupid. All Brown had to do was lay low and let Meg crumble and now he lets this happen. Fuck Fuck Fuck.

11. Really?
You really think this poorly contrived "scandal" is going to sway anybody
in California into a different course of action? Anybody who'd be offended
by this most ludicrous "story" was going to vote for Whitman anyway. Every
sane person sees that description of Meg for what it is - the truth. Actually
she's more like a john, trying to buy something she could earn if she weren't
such a despicable creature.

(Apologies to all actual whores for the comparison)

15. No. Neither is accurate unless Meg is literally selling sex.. But, as a
figure of speech,"whore" applies more. Whether it is a figure of speech that demeans women in general is debatable.

10. The Whitman campaign has got nuthin' - they are grasping any straw they can find to get back in

The Governor's election has been decided in every way except for voting at the ballot box, and Whitman has already lost.

Publishing a message from a voice mail machine is just another sign of pure desperation by Whitman.

Speaking of whores, the LA Times is showing it role by attempting to keep Whitman alive in order for the newspaper to sell more advertisements.

Whitman should just concede to Brown now and spare California, and the world, this farce that once was a contest for public office.

13. The obviously altered tape is not my concern.
What bothers me is the stupid decision by the police union to endorse Meg.

When will unions learn, you can not make a deal with the devil. You lose every time.

Just like the Air Traffic Controllers who supported Ronnie Raygun. And what was the first union he devastated? Why it was the air traffic controllers.

Unions have got to stop thinking they are CEOs and realize they are nothing but working people who RepubliCONS will betray every chance they get.

campaign had been "pimping" Chelsea, yet crying "foul" if media asked her questions.

Maybe we should just consider dropping from our everyday language based on negative images of women, even if we are claiming that a man is whoring himself out or has smaller balls than a woman. Anyhow, politicians and broadcasters would be well advised so to do.

Still, I can't imagine a single vote switching 'cause someone in Brown's camp used a common metaphor, esp. not with the shape California is in.

28. The Brown campaign must stop stepping on it's dick.
To us on DU this is a non-story. To us on DU the euphemism has validity as the Whitman campaign does indeed shamelessly whore itself out to get support - much more so than the Democratic side.

But, this will be a big deal to conservatives, Fox News and the right wing nut-sphere. And they'll use it to con less sophisticated independents.

The general non-DU public will see this as unseemly.

Additionally, things like this diminish our (Democrats') moral authority when complaining about Republican candidates doing similar things (think "macaca", etc.).

We need to quit bitching about the LA Times leaning right and whining about the tape being altered and so on. We need to watch our mouths, even in private. Assume everything's being recorded.

Given the right wing nut-bags that have endorsed Whitman, the severe swing to the right she took during the primary, plus some of the whacked out hypocrisy she and her campaign have displayed, I am almost numb with disbelief that the race is as close as it is. Every point counts. And when we're ahead by a mere two points, something like this at the wrong time can push the opponent over the edge to victory.

We are not freepers.

31. This won't hurt Jerry Brown because he didn't say it.
Pot will be legalized, Brown will be Governor and Boxer will return to the Senate, Prop 23 will go down in flames.

Brown will defeat Whitman by at least 7 points on election night.

She's spent $140 million dollars and still can't rewrite the love Californians have for Jerry.

Don't worry about this.
