Donald Trump’s casino business on the brink of bankruptcy

DONALD TRUMP, the Manhattan property mogul, is on the brink of bankruptcy at his casinos and hotels business, which is swamped with $1.8 billion (£980 million) of debt.

The entrepreneur has been in talks since February with Credit Suisse First Boston to refinance the massive debt.

But even if the bank agrees to lend Mr Trump the $400 million he needs, he would be forced to step down as chief executive of the casinos business and see his name removed from the company logo, while reducing his investment to a minority shareholding.

“Absent the successful completion of one of these alternatives,” Ernst & Young added, referring to the restructuring plan, “the company’s operating results will increasingly become uncertain. These conditions raise substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

But even if the business fails, Mr Trump will remain one of the richest men in America with a personal fortune of $1.4 billion. He owns seven of the most famous skyscrapers in New York, which punctuate the Manhattan skyline with slivers of black and gold.
