NY TimesNew York City officials and the police on Saturday called it the worst antigay case in recent memory, as new details emerged about the gang of nine young men accused of abducting and torturing two 17-year-olds and a 30-year-old gay man known throughout their Bronx neighborhood as “La Reina,” Spanish for “The Queen.”
Two suspects were still being sought and seven others were awaiting arraignment on Saturday, nearly a week after the attacks in an abandoned building in the Morris Heights section. A spokesman for the Bronx district attorney's office said he expected them to be charged with hate crimes in a series of attacks the police said included unlawful imprisonment, beatings that went on for hours and gruesome sexual assaults on two victims with a small baseball bat and the wooden handle of a toilet plunger, as well as cigarette burns on the genitals of the older man.
“These attacks are appalling and are even more despicable because the victims were clearly targeted in acts of hate simply because they are gay,” said Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker, who is gay. “The cowardly few who committed these crimes do not represent New Yorkers, and our community will not be cowed by such violence.”
