Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto power to cut nearly $1 billion from state budget

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used his line-item veto power Friday to cut nearly $1 billion from the $87.5 billion budget the Legislature had passed that morning.

Schwarzenegger slashed $256 million from a child care program for families moving off welfare and $133 million from mental health services for special education students, among other reductions from the $87.5 billion budget.

The final budget will, however, provide more K-12 education funding than the governor had proposed in May. It also increases the funding of the University of California and California State University systems by at least $250 million each.

School district officials from Oakland and Berkeley said they expect public schools will receive roughly $250 more per student than they had anticipated based on the governor's May budget proposal. In Oakland, that amounts to about $9 million, in addition to roughly $13 million more in early childhood education funding, said spokesman Troy Flint.

Here is a preview of the budget balancing that will probably be taking place in Florida, Illinois, New York and Arizona if Republican solutions are implemented: accounting gimmicks, budget cutting and unrealistic projections of future tax revenue.

Good luck.

1. What a despicable prick - the budget is 3 months late, and rather than honor
the budget agreement that was finally reached he pulls out the veto pen the very next morning. Modern Republicans have no integrity...

4. Which is why I don't want a line item veto in the president's hands.

2. That's what we've been enduring in Ga. - just to cut taxes for special interests

Damned teabaggers and their republicon co-horts just don't give a crap about anyone except themselves.

Our previous governor, Democrat Roy Barnes, had started to straighten out our education system. After 8 years of a republicon that's starting to unravel. It seems to be the same story everywhere.

I don't understand how conservatives don't give a shit about them after they're not a fetus anymore. I would love to hear one of them explain that to me.

7. Cutting child care for families leaving welfare and mental health services?
The consequences will bite California big time later on. Good thing Ahnuld is getting termed out, and the Republican candidate isn't leading in the preliminary gubernatorial polls!
