Whitman and Fiorina court key Latino vote in rare joint appearance
Source: LA Times

When Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina clinched their party's nominations for governor and U.S. Senate in June, Whitman proclaimed on stage that their joint effort would be the Democrats' worst nightmare. But they have gone separate ways on the campaign trail, never publicly crossing paths again until Friday night at a gala of a prominent group of Latino business leaders in Newport Beach.

* * *
The candidates sat at separate tables during a two-hour reception in the club's ballroom, but they exchanged a hug and a few words briefly during the mariachi performance when Fiorina visited Whitman's table. At the direction of the band leader a short while later, they toasted and drank shots of tequila with Mimi Walters, the GOP nominee for state treasurer.

Fiorina began her speech with a high-pitched trill and said the evening's festivities had "spoiled" her forever.

"I think every speech should begin with a shot of tequila," she said.

1. Every one of YOUR speeches, Carly,
should begin with a shot of truth serum. What a moron.

5. what do you bet they both said 'let's get this Mexican thing over with together'

they are so out of their element, it is actually quite entertaining to imagine them thinking "I'm really reaching these people, I really yam!"

7. Col. Sanders & Popeye court poultry vote at chicken convention
A good strategy perhaps. Except the birds in attendance were way too smart to take the bait, not caring to lose their heads, feathers, guts, and be dismembered. So come election day they told the good colonel and sailor man to take a hike.

9. Why do ppl in this thread think Latinos can't be Republicans?
There are, after all, rich Latinos. That's who attended the gala with Carly and Meg.

Latinos aren't all lettuce-pickers. Take Mexico's Carlos Slim. He is the richest man in the world, according to CBS. He would vote Republican if he could.

10. Sure they can. Take South Florida for example.
What I think, and most people appear to be saying/thinking, is that Whitman and Fiorina took hard lines against immigration in the primaries. They demonized anyone with brown skin, and now they want their vote? And I dare say that economic, or maybe religious, circumstances are the only reasons to vote for Republicans. And shame on people for sacrificing their values to vote for their own economic benefit.

11. Opposing illegal immigration is not equal to demonizing brown ppl
I think you are conflating the two. I'll bet every rich Latino at the gathering was legal. Carly and Meg do not demonize rich, legal Latinos. I'll bet that privately, they don't oppose the poor, illegal ones, either. Republicans love cheap labor. The anti-immigration posture is just pandering to the fascist right.

from objecting to illegal immigration to demonizing brown people. And they do it on purpose for the racist contingent in their base.

In my experience, Republican candidates are very careful to avoid overtly racist comments.

I'm not sure how someone can "demonize" in code. An example would help.

Fact-Checking Dobbs: CNN Anchor Lou Dobbs Challenged on Immigration Issues

In a wide-ranging interview, CNN anchor Lou Dobbs joins Democracy Now! for the hour to discuss:

* His claim that a "third of our prison population" are illegal aliens (according to the Justice Department about 6 percent of the state and federal prison population are non-citizens)

* Why white supremacists have appeared on Lou Dobbs Tonight without disclosure over their ties to hate groups

* His show’s reporting on leprosy and immigration. A 2005 report on Lou Dobbs Tonight claimed there had been 7,000 new cases of leprosy in the U.S. over the past three years. In fact, there have been 7,000 cases reported over the past 30 years

* And more…

21. Good example of demonizing illegal immigrants, but not 'brown ppl.'
Dobbs, who is a fascist stalking horse, is married to a Latina. I don't think he wants to demonize "brown people." But he certainly wants to demonize undocumented immigrants (while also employing them, as we know). Those are two different things. Dobbs is more of an "Ausländer Raus!" type of fascist.

were from the Conservative Citizens Council, which is a hate group, not an anti-immigration group.

17. Oh, that's simple.
They're against "illegal immigration"....

Which is basically claiming that there is such a thing as a "legal" and "illegal" presence of people.

Racist as it gets.

18. That's "simple"? :)
"Illegal immigrant" is a racist term? So if I call an undocumented Canadian resident of the US an "illegal immigrant" then I am racist against Canadians? Sorry, that's not "simple." It's not even believable.

23. Are you a legal human being?
Do you have the documentation to *prove* that it's legal for you to even claim to be a human being?

See how absurd that sounds?

A starting sentence, for slavery-era America:
With nationalism/regionalism, an additional layer is added, where people are somehow expected to be part of "the American people", with paperwork added to prove it's alright for them to claim to be part of that people.

Germany, 1930's:
With nationalism/regionalism, an additional layer is added, where people are somehow expected to be part of "the Aryan race", with paperwork added to prove it's alright for them to claim to be part of that race.

Turkey, 1910's:
With nationalism/regionalism, an additional layer is added, where people are somehow expected to be part of "the Turkish people", with paperwork added to prove it's alright for them to claim to be part of that people.

Nationalism IS racism, it's an artificial social construct that creates an artificial division of people without any logical or scientific basis whatsoever.

Call me after someone in Arizona gets asked for ID on saying "aboot."

25. Can't Imagine That A Person Of Color Would Agree With Fiorina's Support of Arizona Law
It is one thing to oppose illegal immigration, but to support having cops question people about their immigration status based on a reasonable suspicision? That is a recipe for racial profiling. I have yet to see any latino rights group back Arizona's law.

26. Similarly, don't assume all rich folks are Republican or Republican wannabes.
The Kennedy family, Kerry, Jay Rockefeller, Grayson, Buffet, Soros--many millionaires and multi-millionaires are lefties.

(Followed your link, but saw no reference to Slim's voting Repubiican if he could.)

28. California Latinos have particular reasons for avoiding the repukes like the plague that they are
going back to Prop 187, an Arizona-style attempt to criminalize brownness that, mercifully, was struck down by the courts. Its chief proponent, Pete Wilson, is currently serving as NutMeg's campaign manager. "Do as I say, not as I do." :eyes:

Latino voters in Newport Beach but not in Santa Ana or Orange. Of course they would be more economically comfortable w/ the Latino voters in Newport, there just aren't half as many of them as elsewhere in Orange County.
