Several blocks of deadly C-4 explosive were found Monday morning in an East Village cemetery, police sources said.

There were no blasting caps found with the bricks, meaning there was no way to detonate the explosive.

"But it's still C-4, so it's being taken very seriously," a police source said.

Six to eight blocks of the plastic, military-grade explosive, formally known as Composition 4, were found in a black plastic garbage bag just inside Marble Cemetery, on E. Second St., between First and Second Aves.

The discovery was made at 10:50 a.m.

The NYPD Bomb Squad rushed to the scene, and police closed the area to traffic.

1. "deadly C-4 explosive" . . . . as opposed to the non-deadly kind.
That's enough C-4 to do one hell of a lot of damage though.

If someone knows what they're doing (as in making shaped charges, etc.) a little C-4 can go a LONG way.

Someone was planning something pretty significant (or was a fanatical gasbag that was stockpiling it).

14. Sounds like it was a drop off.
Who else would stash C-4 in a cemetary?

Unless the undead have bigger plans than just being dead?

It obviously wasn't the Count who found this stuff. He would know how many bricks of C4 there were in the cemetery.

13. you need
either a big flashy gun (with unlimited bullets) or other improvised weapon to survive the horde.

(BTW if you visit a gun board and post "what kind of gun do I need to survive the zombie apocalypse?", that thread becomes something fun to watch - as long as they aren't folks with no sense of humor)

15. Since Zombies are attracted to sound...

big explosions wouldn't do anyone a bit of good.

However, my little invention to kill massive amounts of zombies. It would be a boom box with a timed explosive on it.

Set it out in the middle of a large area, turn up the volume all the way (11?), then run like hell.

As soon as the zombie horde crowds around, hit the detonator! Boom! Zombies everywhere. Not a guaranteed head shot, but I'm sure it would do the trick.

LOL

19. actually
I think that a claymore mine (or C4 with ball bearings) set at head height will do the job.

20. True, but...
since I doubt I will have access to an armory, I will have to create something from scratch.

A battery operated radio alarm clock, some c-4 (god knows how I would get that since I don't have access to an amory. details, details, details) and a denotator attached to the alarm, will work in a pinch.

LOL

21. add nuts and bolts
that would give sufficient shrapnel to increase the odds of a head shot out to 10 - 15m rather than rely on just the blast concussion.

10. Weirder still...
Updated: Monday, October 11th 2010, 5:10 PM

The C-4, wrapped in a black plastic garbage bag and buried in area away from graves, was dug up more than a year ago by a caretaker who didn't know what it was and put it aside against a tree.

There the deadly package sat, apparently undisturbed in the heart of the busy East Village, for 16 months.
"It's a potent material, irrespective of how long it's there," Kelly noted.

So it appears maybe someone in the Hell's Angels (or their enemies) forgot about the stash.

16. Isn't C-4 only "deadly" when used with a detonator?
otherwise, I understand it's pretty inert. You could hit it with a hammer and nothing would happen, correct?

17. It's chemical toxicity would be sufficient to qualify it has a hazardous material, even if...
...it wasn't a high-order explosive.

You could hit it with a hammer and nothing would happen, correct?

Yes, that is correct. You can even burn it in a fire and it will just burn.
