The Globe and MailCanada has become the first jurisdiction in the world to declare bisphenol A toxic, following the publication of regulations on Wednesday adding the widely used plastic-making compound to Canada’s most dangerous substances list.
The announcement in the Canada Gazette, formally adds the chemical, also known as BPA, to the list of “toxic substances” listed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. It follows years of intense lobbying.
BPA has become a health concern because it is able to mimic estrogen, raising worries that it might cause cancers and other illnesses linked to having excessive amounts of the female hormone. Dozens of experiments with animals have found it to be biologically active, many using exposures in the range to which humans are exposed.
Although the federal government has declared BPA toxic, the European Food Safety Authority recently evaluated the chemical and didn’t come to the same conclusion as experts at Health Canada and Environment Canada. In the U.S., there is a major regulatory effort to study the chemical, but results aren’t expected until next year.
