Condom Label Changes Sparks Debate
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 04:00 PM by salin
salin's commentary: So, we can't give accurate information about the air quality at ground zero, about the truth of the asbestoes problems, or about Mad Cow's disease. But for public health's sake... change those condom wrapper warnings to reflect the danger of genital warts!

Condom Label Changes Sparks Debate
Pending Changes in Condom Labeling to Include Information on HPV, Genital Warts Sparks Debate

The Associated Press

CHICAGO April 1 — That tiny bit of print on a condom packet is at the center of a raging debate now that President George W. Bush has asked the Food and Drug Administration to modify the current warning to include information about human papillomavirus, commonly called HPV or genital warts.
On one side are scientists who believe that condoms should be promoted as a crucial line of defense against several STDs and cervical cancer. On the other are groups that advocate waiting for sex until marriage, and who see the dangers of HPV as an argument for their cause.

Justin Kleinman hadn't noticed the condom packet wording until he squinted to read it recently.

"This is completely pointless," the 24-year-old Chicagoan said of the warning telling him that, while condoms can help prevent the spread of some sexually transmitted diseases, there are no guarantees.

"The lack of information getting to the American public regarding this disease is beyond comprehension," said Linda Klepacki, manager of the abstinence policy department at Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based organization.

3. another way to push their "Abstinence only" with mis-information
There are enough studies showing that condoms help prevent STDs.

They think scaring people might prevent them from having sex. Yeah right. Spreading such mis-information might lead to a decrease in condom use. What morons.

The website Politics & Science lists all the distortions and mis-informations from the Bush administration:

It worked well for my High school class.

My class was surveyed on our last day of classes. According to the data, about 70% of my Graduating class of 72 people were sexually active. Guess what kind of Sex ed program we had going at Coleman High School.

We had three girls carry thier pregnancies to term, two ended up dropping out, the other managed to barley graduate. I do remember that there were rumors going around about some of the more affluent girls getting knocked up and then going down to Milwauke to have their pregnancies terminated. (One of the rumored girls had parents who at the time were officers im marinette County Right-to-Life.)
