GE to invest $432M to revamp appliance business
Source: Washington Post

NEW YORK -- GE plans to spend $432 million to establish four U.S.-based refrigeration design and manufacturing centers that will be the focus for its new energy efficient line of refrigerators and other appliances.

General Electric Co. said Monday the move will create 500 new jobs by 2014 and help preserve another 1,166 existing positions.

GE said its investment is an effort to revitalize its appliance business and take advantage of increasing global competitiveness of U.S. factories.

The centers will be at existing locations in Louisville, Ky.; Bloomington, Ind.; Decatur, Ala., and Selmer, Tenn.

1. They are also at the forefront of developing renewable energy products
They have not always been a company that I have liked but they are doing some good things.

3. glad to hear that. i winder what knowing that ge has stuff made i usa
will do to my brother's vitriolic hate of GE? i know he also still refuses to buy heinz ketchup if that gives you any ideas.... HINT HINT.... he LOVES glen beck and gets all his screwball info from him.

but i am SO glad to hear of jobs being created in the US. gives me something american to buy. we just bought a maytag stove that i believe was made in the US somewhere.... it's a gemini gas double oven with convection. i hope that seeing people purposely choosing things made here will encourage other companies to bring their work back here.

5. GE is a pretty conservative company overall
and their former CEO Jack Welch is a big time right winger.

funny how them at least being smart enough to realize there is a market for a center-left news media (Olbermann, Maddow, Schultz, O'Donnell on MSNBC)makes them evil in the eyes of Glen Beck. I'm sure GE just sees it as good business.

Same with investing in green technology - they know it's the way of the future, especially in the EU, Japan, Australia, Canada and even the US. To them, it's probably not about being green, it's about making money.

7. for many it's about money. i want to be 'green' but let's face it, the biggest selling point
is saving money. it's maddening to see this country slag along with we are #1 without actually DOING anything to actually BE number 1 at anything. we could be that for 'green' energy. solar, wind.... electric vehicles.... instead we want to run around saying how we are the best and apparently that is enough to make us so.

and i am not referring to us... i am referring to this country in general. people i know who don't seem to care if we make anything or do anything worthwhile.

10. Then once the new appliances become popular, they will promptly close the plants
Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 08:23 AM by Javaman
lay off the American workers, then move that same plant to a third world nation, pay the workers slave wages, all so they can make more money then they were already making.

I get really tired of being a cynic sometimes, but sadly, this seems to be the bait and switch many corps use to suck in the American buying public. They promote things as being "American Made", then once what ever gewgaw they are selling becomes wildly popular (or even just popular), they quietly pack things up and move over seas for bigger profit, all the while never uttering a single word about where that same gewgaw is now made. But the PR work has been done and the ignorant American public eats it up thinking they are still "buying American".

I have always like GE products, they have done well by me, but my allegiance is to no corporation, it is to the United States. (what we have left of it).
