Miller Cites Communist East Germany as Effective in Dealing with Border Security

The scuffle between the editor of Alaska Dispatch and Joe Miller's security guards at a public forum in Anchorage late Sunday is getting much national attention today. Getting lesser but growing attention is Miller's answer at the forum to a question from the audience about how he would deal with illegal immigration. Anchorage blogger Steve Aufrecht was there and is among those today who are criticizing Miller's response that Communist East Germany would be a good example for the U.S. to emulate in achieving border security. He quotes Miller as saying: "The first thing that has to be done is secure the border. ... East Germany was very, very able to reduce the flow. Now, obviously, other things were involved. We have the capacity to, as a great nation, secure the border. If East Germany could, we could."

Aufrecht's post includes video with an audio recording of Miller's comment.


As The Times of London reported a few years ago, linked here via Fox News, East German troops had official "licence to fire" on citizens trying to flee across the heavily fortified 860-mile border into West Germany or across the Berlin Wall to West Berlin. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people died in the attempt.

Mindblowing.. 20 year after the wall was down, an american hopefull for Kongress want to build up a fence, like that of the Iron Curtin to keep peopole out, or was it poepole in in the country.

TH pressidence of this is just, mindblowing.... even try to say something like this in most of Europe, would be the end of a political career long before it even started.. But in US i guess it is enough to give you some "creds" in border security this days...

Yeah the DDR was able to do that with walls, barbed wire, fences, dogs, no-go zones, search lights, guard towers, machine guns, mines, self firing weapons, a secret police numbering about 10% of the population and guards who would end in serious problems if they didn't use their weapons.

It wasn't a secure border so much as a free fire zone.

ps: and the effort put a huge drain on the DDR economy, perhaps if morality of the Iron curtain isn't deterrent the cost for it will be.

The East Germans had that. Repubs dream of a magical "border fence" that will eliminate all illegal immigration if it is just high enough, wide enough, strong enough, technologically sophisticated enough, etc. The East Germans will tell you that walls, mine fields and everything else won't get it done unless it's backed up by soldiers willing to shoot.

The real question the repubs have to answer is do we want to become "real East Germans" (the only difference being out guns would be facing out at "them" not in at "us") in order to secure our border or do we solve the illegal immigration problem in a more comprehensive manner.

The United States could learn from East Germany's effectiveness in sealing its border with the Wall during the Cold War, a local politician seeking election to the US Senate has said.

Republican candidate Joe Miller, a Senate candidate in Alaska for November 2 mid-term elections, made the comments when discussing immigration at a town hall meeting reported by the Anchorage Daily News.

Miller said that, when he was serving in the US military, he spent time at the Fulda Gap near Frankfurt, a key point on the frontline between the then East and West Germanies.

"That was .. when the Wall was still up between East and West Germany, he said in an audio clip on the Alaska newspaper's website.

"East Germany was very, very able to reduce the flow," Miller said, adding: "Obviously there were other things that were involved, but we have the capacity as a great nation to obviously secure our border.
