Angle To Latino Students: 'Some Of You Look A Little More Asian To Me'

Eric Kleefeld | October 18, 2010, 12:40PM1107

While speaking to a group of Latino students on the virtues of America as a melting pot, Republican Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle said that some of the students looked Asian to her.

As Jon Ralston reports:

"So that's what we want is a secure and sovereign nation and, you know, I don't know that all of you are Latino. Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that. I've been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly."

That last comment, about her being called the first Asian legislator? I have no idea what she is talking about.

2. Wow, those Asians -- they're certainly getting better at subterfuge. . .
They started out all looking the same,* and now they've seemingly begun to look like everyone else, too.

Indeed, she's certainly something. Think I'll stick with "maroon" as well to avoid offending anyone . . .

(Frank Burns, M*A*S*H (television series) -- "The Chinese are an exceptionally tricky people, you know. They don't all look alike by accident!")

19. I think I jumbled the quotes together. . .
The Duke quote ("An especially tricky people" ) was the title of a Doonesbury book years ago, while Frank Burns contributed the idiocy, "They don't all look alike by accident, you know."

7. "More Asian" than what?

More Asian than Hispanic?

Wait, wait, don't tell me.... The Chinese are now producing cheap knock-off Hispanics, shipping them to Mexico, and having them run to Arizona where they start lopping heads off of people only Jan Brewer can see?

Sharron Angle is a real gem.

13. CBS: Sharron Angle Tells Hispanic Students they Look Asian; Argues Immigration Ad Not About Southern
Border

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20019924-503544.html

In a meeting with Hispanic high school students on Friday, Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle downplayed her campaign's use of generic pictures of Latinos to present a negative image of illegal immigrants.

Angle has run a series of ads slamming her opponent, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, for being soft on illegal immigration. Questioned about the ads, which feature somber-looking, dark-skinned men and phrases like "illegal aliens," Angle told a Hispanic group from Rancho High School that the ads do not necessarily portray Latinos. Furthermore, she told the students confronting her that they themselves do not necessarily look Latino.

Angle responds: "I think that you're misinterpreting those commercials. I'm not sure that those are Latinos in that commercial. What it is, is a fence and there are people coming across that fence. What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through. That's the most porous border that we have. We cannot allow terrorists; we cannot allow anyone to come across our border if we don't know why they're coming. So we have to secure all of our borders and that's what that was about, is border security. Not just our southern border, but our coastal border and our northern border."

"So that's what we want is a secure and sovereign nation and, you know, I don't know that all of you are Latino," Angle told the Hispanic group. "Some of you look a little more Asian to me. I don't know that. What we know, what we know about ourselves is that we are a melting pot in this country. My grandchildren are evidence of that. I'm evidence of that. I've been called the first Asian legislator in our Nevada State Assembly."
