Gunmen, suicide bomber attack Chechen parliament and ministry building
Source: msnbc

At least two people were killed Tuesday when a suicide bomber and a number of gunmen attacked the local parliament in Russia's restive southern republic of Chechnya, the RIA news agency reported.

RIA said a suicide bomber had detonated explosives just outside parliament and that two armed insurgents had then engaged in a gun battle with guards around the building.

The Interfax news agency reported that three or four gunmen had broken into the parliament building itself and opened fire. It said a number of hostages had been taken.

The Itar-Tass news agency also said that other insurgents had stormed the Chechen agriculture minister in a separate attack.

2. Islamic militants raid Chechen parliament, 6 dead
Islamic insurgents attacked Chechnya's parliament Tuesday in a brazen suicide raid that left six people dead and 17 wounded, defying Kremlin claims of stability in the volatile southern region.

In a clear challenge to Moscow, the raid occurred just as Russia's interior minister was visiting the provincial capital of Grozny.

The three attackers drove to the tightly guarded parliament complex and got inside. One militant blew himself up at the doors and another two ran into the building shouting "Allahu akbar!" -- "God is great!" in Arabic -- as they opened fire on the people inside, said Chechen police spokesman Ramzan Bekkhoyev.

The regional chief prosecutor's office said the remaining two attackers also blew themselves up after exchanging fire with police, while other officials said they were killed in a gunbattle. Two police officers and a civilian government employee were killed in the raid and 17 others were wounded, prosecutors said.

3. Kadyrov blames London for Grozny attack
Kadyrov blames London for Grozny attack
by Tom Washington at 20/10/2010 12:40
Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov has taken a swipe at the west, implicating them in the terrorist attack on his parliament yesterday.

While naming separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev as the brains behind the attack, he blasted British and Polish authorities for shielding his prime suspect.

“The authorities in London and Warsaw are harbouring criminals. Why do they shield bandits who have shed blood where there is western democracy? Where is the justice? Let them send their representatives and we will prove Zakayev’s guilt. Sooner or later Zakayev, Gakayev, Umarov, Vadalov and other criminals will get what they deserve. We will get our hands on them,” Kadyrov said in a press release after the attack.

Zakayev has refugee status in the UK, and was recently allowed to leave Poland after being briefly detained at a Chechen congress in Warsaw.
