Poll: Only 2/3 of 2008 Obama Backers Plan to Vote Democrat
Posted by Bill Plante 328 comments

Updated 10:20 a.m. ET

A new CBS News-Knowledge Networks Poll shows President Obama's approval rating among people who voted for him in 2008 remains very strong, at 82 percent, but that will do little to help Democrats hold onto seats in Congress on November 2.

CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante reports that, for the White House, keeping control of the House and Senate is all about getting Democrats and Independents who voted for the president in 2008 back to the polls, and on that score, the latest poll numbers show Mr. Obama hasn't closed the sale.

Only two-thirds of Obama voters in 2008 (67 percent) say they'll vote for one of his fellow Democrats in 2010. Eight percent of those voters say they will vote Republican this year, and 21 percent say it depends.
The biggest erosion of support is among independents; just 42 percent of Obama's 2008 independent voters say they'll support a Democrat this year. Twelve percent say they'll vote for a Republican, and 38 percent were still undecided.

The one-word slogan that defined candidate Obama's campaign, "change" has been hard to come by, according to those surveyed. Just 16 percent of Obama voters believe he has brought significant change to the way Washington works. Almost half (48 percent) of independents say he's brought little change, or none at all.

1. Hardly unusual. 1/3rd of the voters in presidential elections don't vote in the off-year.
(Give or take a smidge).

I wouldn't be surprised to see similar statistics for McCain voters.

2. More DC GOP spinning/
Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 12:30 PM by Mass
Reading the results of the poll tells you the result is not that bad. You would have to compare the 67 % to the GOP's results, but I suspect that, like in the AP poll, they would have found the ratio was similar. I suspect that, in mid-term elections, a ratio of 2/3 of voters compared to a presidential year is not unusual.

Among Obama voters
2010 Vote for House of Representatives
(Among likely voters)
All Democrats Independents
Republican 8% 3% 12%
Democrat 67 81 42
Depends 21 14 38

There is a piece of good news in this poll. The GOP has closed the deal with a very small minority of Obama voters, including Democrats. Of course, it would be a lot better if Democrats had close the deal, but it is worth noticing.

According to http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/polls/#USP00p1">CNN 2008 exit poll

Obama supposedly got 9% of the repuke vote. I expect those same repukes voted for their own repuke for Congress then. The independents probably voted for either based on their own local tastes. And on and on.

Obama is not running for office and this is irrelevant to anything dealing with Congressional races.

THANK YOU!

And 2/3 voting FOR is bad news? What? ONLY 2/3rds?????? That's a huge majority!

This is more spin designed to discourage. Screw it!

It's like that bill board of Obama as various racial stereotypes the Teabaggers put up. The real message that bill board sent.... the real news was not touched on. And that is: Could there be any other way to see it than the Teabaggers are scared of the black man in the White House? Midterms are not mainly about the presidency! Racism straight up.

OBAMA IS NOT RUNNING THIS YEAR.

5. They've pretty much worked to have this happen ...not only the corporate agenda....
Edited on Tue Oct-19-10 12:56 PM by defendandprotect
but DIRECT and FREQUENT insulting criticisms of the liberal/progressive base --

so much so in criticizing elected Democrats that Pelosi contacted the White House

twice to complain. Elections this year and White House criticizing Democrats?

It is sad -- but let's face it, it makes no sense!!

Let's hope that the Democratic voters gets back in the mood to overthrow the Republicans

and decide that the only way to do that is to "hold your nose" and vote again for Dems!!??

We need to keep moving to the LEFT -- we need to keep pushing forward to the LEFT --

and we need to continue to think about knocking out Republicans.

After that, we can double back and deal with corporate-Democrats.

I refuse to accept that these bat crap crazy candidates are really popular.

Turn off the lights and cameras and these jackoffs will disappear into the black holes they crawled out of.

Move along, there's nothing to see here!

17. As many have already pointed out, B-S
First thought I had when reading that headline was that it ought to be perfectly obvious that few voters from either party turn out, 2/3 is actually pretty good for an off year election.

I also agree with everyone else that more and better progressives need to be running. I was thinking about this for a while and have this opinion: The repukes usually do a pretty good job of maintaining party discipline regardless of their nominee for a particular post. We Democrats need to take a lesson from that - campaign like hell for a good progressive in the primary, and then, win or lose, campaign like hell for the winner of our primary in the general election. I almost hate to say it, but even having a Blanche Lincoln or Joe Lie-berman is better than a tea-bagger in those seats.

23. Is Obama running? Republicons have tried to make this election a referendum on Obama.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 04:23 AM by No Elephants
It isn't. They've also tried to make it about immigrants. It isn't.

Both are dog whistles to those Republicans who are racist and/or xenophobic.

This election is about people like Russ Feingold, who was in office long before Obama became U.S. Senator, let alone President. It's about things like protecting Social Security from privatization.

ETA: Most importantly, it's about not exhuming the very same policies that almost put America into a second Great Depression. That's ALL Republicans have been offering. (How could I have forgotten to mention that?)

19. If they are off by 10%
And 10% more do show up (of that one-third), then we will be safe.
It just means we need a heavy get out the vote.
Still two weeks left - plenty of time.

24. For months, the media has been spinning, desperately trying to make a Republicon sweep seem
inevitable, so Democrats believe there's no point voting.

Make it backfire. Vote--and take your neighbors to the polls with you.
